Kung Fu Star Jackie Chan: “We Chinese Need To Be Controlled”

We take for granted that individual choice and freedom is life’s ideal.  We might argue, left versus right, about how to best achieve that goal, but you rarely hear someone say they don’t believe in freedom.  Speaking at a forum of business leaders in Hainan, China, movie star Jackie Chan said he’s not so sure a free society is such a good thing.

“I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not,” Chan said. “I’m really confused now. If you’re too free, you’re like the way Hong Kong is now. It’s very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic.”

Chan added: “I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we’re not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want.”

Chan is known to perform most of his own stunts but, unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be one of them.
