More Troops To War In Afghanistan

President Obama is responding to what he is being told by generals on the ground, that more troops are neeed to shore up a deteriorating effort in Afghanistan.  Approximately 8,000 Marines followed by 9,000 Army troops are slated to arrive by the time the weather warms up.

The Rand Corporation think tank says a game-changer is needed in Afghanistan, and Obama says a resurgent Taliban with support from al Qaeda is a threat to our safety.  But he is also saying the military is not the only answer.

“I’m absolutely convinced that you cannot solve the problem of Afghanistan, the Taliban and the spread of extremism in the region solely through military means,” he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in an interview ahead of his trip to Ottawa on Thursday. “We’re going to have to use diplomacy, we’re going to have to use development.”

The word “surge” comes to mind. I hope to soon hear more about goals and exit strategy.
