Daschle Withdraws

This comes one day after President Obama said he’d unequivocally stand behind him.  White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says Daschle did this voluntarily, and not with a signal from the White House.  It’s truly a shame.  Daschle would have made an excellent HHS Secretary.  But it’s also a shame that things went this long, this far, before these issues became public.  Had Daschle paid up long ago, this wouldn’t have been an issue.  OTOH they confirm Geithner as Treasury Secretary, and his area of concern has much more to do with taxes than Daschle’s does.  Sounds like one standard does not apply to all.

And this comes the same day Nancy Killefer, who failed for a year and a half to pay employment taxes on household help, withdrew her candidacy to be the first chief performance officer for the federal government.  Are we holding public servants to too high and, often double, standards?
