Republicans Believe Fewer People Voting Helps Their Cause

They’ve been against almost every effort to increase voter rolls, including motor voter registration, same-day voting, and registration by mail.  Now, Brad Friedman of Bradblog, who’s done much work on the Republican war on Democracy,  has unearthed a video from 1980, where Paul Weyrich, co-founder of, among other things, the Heritage Foundation and the Moral Majority, and who is often referred to as “the founding father of conservatism”, is shown speaking to 15,000 preachers in Dallas in 1980 about the Republican philosophy on voting:

“Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome – good government. They want everybody to vote. I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”
