Sarah Palin: Pragamatist Or Ideologue?

Sarah Palin used the power of the pen and the line item veto to slash funding that would have provided needy teen mothers with a place to live.  

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin wrote in her line-item veto changes by hand in this copy of a 2008 spending bill obtained by The Washington Post.

When word came out about her own teenage daughter being five months pregnant, this statement was released by the McCain campaign:

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family,” Palin said in a statement released by the McCain campaign. “We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy, as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

John McCain, when asked whether he supports programs that instruct teens about contraception to prevent pregnancy, or if he preferred President Bush’s abstincence poicy, said, “Ahhh, I think I support the president’s policy.”

In other Palin news, when she first became the mayor of Wasilla, she approached the town librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, about banning some books that she found morally or socially offensive.  Palin also brought up this idea at a city council meeting.  Emmons was soon fired, but was reinstated after a show of community support.  Palin claimed to the local press that talk of censorship was “rhetorical.”  And when her stepmther-in-law,  Fay Palin, ran to succeed her, Plain supported her opponent, Dianne M. Keller, a religious conservtive, because Fay Palin was a pro-choice independent.
