Gulf Of Tonkin II?

So, there’s an incident in the Strait of Hormuz between the Iranian Guard and the US Navy. It’s unclear just what happened. The Pentagon says Iran is messing with us.

Iranian boats harassed and provoked three American Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to explode the vessels, U.S. officials said Monday, calling it the most serious such incident in years.

But there’s another side to the story. And given what happened at the Gulf of Tonkin, why should we automatically believe the Pentagon? Farideh Farhi at Informed Consent lays it out.

While I cannot rule out the possibility of this provocation, neither can I rule out the possibility voiced by some in the Iranian media that, given the big hoopla made about the incidence in the US as well as Arab media, that the Bush Administration is essentially trying to heighten the Iranian threat right before George Bush’s trip to the region which according to most observers has as one of its objectives the cementing of a coalition against Iran.
