First of all, Romney chose a friendly environment at the Bush 41 library. JFK spoke to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, a group of Baptists who were not so inclined to agree with him, until after he spoke. JFK said the separation of church and state are absolute. Romney made no such statement. JFK was a nominee. Romney hopes to become one. JFK said American’s most pressing issues had nothing to do with religion:

“While the so-called religious issue is necessarily and properly the chief topic here tonight, I want to emphasize from the outset that we have far more critical issues to face in the 1960 election…And they are not religious issues–for war and hunger and ignorance and despair know no religious barriers.”

Romney wouldn’t separate religion from policy:

“Whether it was the cause of abolition, or civil rights, or the right to life itself, no movement of conscience can succeed in America that cannot speak to the convictions of religious people…The founders proscribed the establishment of a state religion, but they did not countenance the elimination of religion from the public square. We are a nation ‘under God” and in God, we do indeed trust’.”
