Republican sheriff and congressional candidate: Most shot by cops ‘are on the way to jail’ anyway

Posted by | October 21, 2016 17:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Henrico County Sheriff Mike Wade is running for an open seat in Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District.

As reported by Blue Virginia’s Lowell Feld, the comments came during Thursday’s debate against Democratic nominee and State Sen. Donald McEachin.

Asked about how to improve relationships between law enforcement and African Americans, Wade lamented that “we always talk about the police officer as being the one that’s wrong in these situations and the media does a poor job.”

He then opined that “the greater problem in this area is the problem we have in this country of mental health and substance abuse.“

“The majority of those people in these situations that are shot are on the way to jail,” he Wade continued, “85 percent of the people that are in jail, according to the paper, have substance abuse problems and 30 percent of them have mental illness problems.”

Shall we talk about middle aged white guys/Republicans with eating disorders Mr. Wade?

    • Robert M. Snyder October 21st, 2016 at 20:57

I am not here to defend Wade’s comments. But I want to point out something that people seem to be overlooking.

In the first nine months of this year, it is true that blacks were killed at a higher rate per 100,000 population than whites. In fact, a black person is 2.4 times more likely to be fatally shot by a police officer than a white person, based upon 2016 statistics.

However it is also true that an Asian person is 2.4 times LESS likely to be killed than a white person.

What’s even more startling is the gender imbalance. The number of men killed by police in 2016 is TWENTY times as great as the number of women. In other words, a man is 20 times more likely to be killed by police than a woman.

I have not heard anyone accusing the police of being biased in favor of Asians or biased against men. So how do we explain these imbalances?

If police are not biased in favor of Asians, then why are Asians 2.4 times less likely to be killed by police?

If police are not biased against men, then why are men killed by police at 20 times the rate of women?

If you say that these imbalances are justified because Asians behave differently than whites, or because women behave differently than men, then why is it wrong to ask whether blacks might be killed at a higher rate because they behave differently than whites?

Two black guys stood in front of a polling place in a predominately black district in 2008. They were carrying billy clubs and opening doors for women. Conservatives had a nervous breakdown. White guys stroll around in front of a polling place and they are called “patriots”.

Cliven Bundy threatened deadly force in protest of a lawful arrest order. He said the government represented “tyranny”. Sheriffs deputies assigned to the incident said that Bundy supporters aimed their weapons at them. Bundy supporters claimed the deputies were lying. Not a word about respecting law enforcement was heard. Colin Kaepernick peacefully takes a knee and he is villified as being unAmerican.

Todd Palin (husband of the former governor of Alaska) was a member of the Alaska Independence Party for nearly a decade. It was founded by a man named Joe Vogler who openly declared his hatred for the United States. He said he was an Alaskan, not an American. Not a word about this during the 2008 campaign. Michelle Obama makes one comment about being proud of this country for the first time, and for some people, it was as if she had been convicted of treason.

No it is not wrong for you to ask your question. But I think the answer is right in front of you. It is not a matter of different behavior. It is a matter of the benefit of the doubt extended to whites that is nowhere to be found for blacks. .

All valid points, and very clearly stated. But consider this:

As of Oct 4, a total of 9 black women out of 21.4 million were killed this year in police shootings in 2016. That’s 0.421 per million.

As of the same date, a total of 346 white men out of 123.8 million were killed in police shootings in 2016. That’s 2.795 per million.

Therefore, white men are being killed at 6.6 times the rate of black women. To put it another way, a black woman is 6.6 times safer than a white man.

          Some more numbers:

Asian females: 0 out of 9.0 million (0.000 per million)
White females: 19 out of 123.8 million (0.153 per million)
Black females: 9 out of 21.4 million (0.421 per million)

Asian males: 14 out of 9.0 million (1.556 per million)
White males: 346 out of 123.8 million (2.795 per million)
Black males: 182 out of 21.4 million (8.505 per million)

Asians (M+F): 14 out of 18.0 million (0.778 per million)
Whites (M+F): 365 out of 197.7 million (1.846 per million)
Blacks (M+F): 191 out of 42.7 million (4.473 per million)

Black males are killed at 20.2 times the rate of black females.
White males are killed at 18.3 times the rate of white females.

The gender disparity is clearly much greater than the racial disparity. Are men truly a greater threat to police, or are women just getting what you call “the benefit of the doubt”?

          • arc99 October 22nd, 2016 at 11:24

One would have to know the number of confrontations between law enforcement and women where deadly force was used or was a valid consideration.

I think it was Mark Twain who said, there are lies, there are damn lies, and then there are statistics. I do not dispute your numbers. But accurate raw, statistical data can be interpreted in a many ways.

For example, let’s say that in a city of 250,000 people, in 5 years, there were 100 “felony stops” by officers. 5 of those escalated to police shootings resulting in death. One of the deceased is female. Only 1 other female was arrested in a felony stop over that 5 year period. Does that mean the likelihood is 50% that a woman will be killed by police? I think this statistical conjecture can only go so far before it leads us to conclusions that may not be accurate.

            • Robert M. Snyder October 22nd, 2016 at 11:49

“I think this statistical conjecture can only go so far before it leads us to conclusions that may not be accurate.”

I agree. But the gender disparity between men and women (20 to 1) is eight times greater than the racial disparity between blacks and whites (2.4 to 1).

If the statistics have any meaning at all, why isn’t the gender disparity a topic of discussion in the news? What assumptions are people making about the differences between men and women?

Suppose that my wife and I just found out that the bank is going to foreclose on our house, and we are both very upset. We drive to work in separate cars by different routes, and we both get pulled over for speeding. Because we are upset, we both lose our tempers and display anger toward the officers. Do you think that the officers will react in the same way toward both of us? The statistics show that men are killed by police at 20 times the rate of women. My guess is that my wife could display a lot of anger and get away with it, but as a man, I have to be a lot more careful.

I do not dispute that “driving while black” is a real issue. But the statistics suggest to me that “driving while male” is a much bigger issue. Women frequently get the benefit of the doubt in situations where men do not.

EXCELLENT – mine was snide, yours is perfect.

      • fahvel October 22nd, 2016 at 04:16

probably the most ignorant comment ever – and trying to cover its idiocy under the guise of seeming like a smart statement is embarrassing.

      • whatthe46 October 22nd, 2016 at 05:05

the only basis you have to believe that blacks behave differently than whites is because of the media and how it’s reported. when black people protest because of the injustice received and some riot, they are thugs. when white people protest and burn crap down or turn over cars or attack the police, it’s releasing frustration because their team lost a damn game. Joe P is a prime example of such. he was fired because he covered up the sexual abuse by Sandusky. white people went ape over that.

if white people were treated in the exact same manner as minorities, you’d see a hell of a lot more white people serving time in prison. the same amount of time for the same crime.

white racist breed children to carry on the hate. do you see how many children are at tRump rallies? do you see the hate and anger coming from his supporters? even police officers are on board with tRump. they have been taught brown is bad, brown is evil, brown is beneath us. Obama was called uppity because he had the audacity to run for the presidency and win. TWICE.

2 female doctors, black, tried to assist someone in need of help on Delta, but their help was refused because the white attendant didn’t believe they were Dr.’s because they are black. if a black man is jogging in his own neighborhood, wealthy neighborhood, at night, the police would question him. if a white man engaging in the same activity was seen, the police wouldn’t care to stop him. the next day, you find the family members murdered. as it turned out, it was the white guy police paid no attention to.

profiling based on ignorance and racism and stupidity is why black men are being murdered. it also explains why Tamir Rice was murdered. Michael Brown, walking in his own neighborhood, murdered. a white guy was shooting at the damn police and he came out of it w/o a scratch. black man selling singles and he’s choked to death.

        • Robert M. Snyder October 22nd, 2016 at 10:47

I have personally known some whites who expressed very racist views, so I agree that racism is part of the equation. But men are killed by police at 20 times the rate of women, and white men are killed by police at 6.6 times the rate of black women. Is that because men behave differently than women, or because police give women the benefit of the doubt? I suspect that it’s a little bit of each.

      • Roctuna October 22nd, 2016 at 10:44

arc99 and whatthe46 say it well. All you’ve done is demonstrate how black males and their actions are perceived as dangerous by authorities but when others, especially white males, do the same things they’re given the benefit of the doubt. The other thing you’ve demonstrated is your facility at calculating rates and ratios.

        • Robert M. Snyder October 22nd, 2016 at 10:52

White men are killed by police at 6.6 times the rate of black females. Can you explain why?

          • Roctuna October 22nd, 2016 at 10:58

Not with certainty, and neither can you, but I’d venture to guess it has a lot to do with perceived threat not necessarily the reality of the situation. Testosterone vs testosterone. Stop trying to reduce a complex societal issue to a simple explanation.

    Face-palm! (shakes head!)

  4. Comicus October 21st, 2016 at 20:17

Sheriff Wade is missing the point. We would rather they go to the jail than the morgue. Bullets should not be a seen as a solution for insanity and addiction.

  5. Red Mann October 21st, 2016 at 21:50

Virginia, the Cradle of Presidents. E. W. Jackson, Randy Forbes, George “macaca” Allan, Dave Brat. Those past Presidents must be spinning in their graves.

  6. fahvel October 22nd, 2016 at 04:14

if his numbers are correct, maybe the usa might consider better mental health care and a more enlightened view of people suffering from substance abuse – oh silly me, then the cops could only shoot the insane who hide behind their weird hair and tiny hands.

  7. robert October 22nd, 2016 at 05:40

I can share a website with the sheriff that have cops with one foot in jail

  8. jybarz October 22nd, 2016 at 10:52

So, Sheriff Pig, because in your opinion most are likely to be on their way to jail, Police execution is justified?

Why not suggest ways to improve the situation instead of justifying police killing of black men as asked? Any suggestions from you could be very useful and might be positive coming from a law enforcement officer as yourself…is that too much to expect from a Repuke?
