Duggar cult leader having retreat to set up arranged marriages for teen girls

Posted by | May 4, 2016 19:42 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

These dads will meet to set up marriages for their daughters who are not yet of age, and not giving their consent.

Quiverfull patriarch, Vaughn Ohlman, who runs a website promoting early, “fruitful” marriage for Truly True Christian™ children, has announced plans for a “Get Them Married!” retreat where fundamentalist fathers will find, and TAKE, suitably submissive young brides to bear many babies for their adolescent sons.

The weekend retreat, which will be held in Wichita this coming November, is “designed to bring together like-minded families (and their unmarried young men and women) who are committed to young, fruitful marriage and to help them overcome the barriers which have kept their children unmarried.”

For around $1200 per family, Quiverfull parents will spend three days “networking” with similarly-delusional zealots who believe men are to be in charge, wives are to be submissive baby-makers, and children are to be sheltered, isolated, indoctrinated, and pushed toward early, prolific marriages for Jesus.

not even Jesus was married that we know of……and he traveled with a group of men

You bring up an issue that has been a point of contention in the Church since the beginning.

Neither Jesus or Paul were pro-marriage.

But, without marriage and reproduction, Christianity is doomed.

The church has never resolved this contradiction.

PS: And there is not biblical definition of marriage. The bible consistently accepts the prevailing cultural understanding of marriage as it changed over time.

I’m curious about your thoughts regarding no biblical definition of marriage…I have not heard that before.

          >> I’m curious about your thoughts regarding no biblical definition of marriage

          Thanks for asking.

Clearly, there isn’t a singular biblical definition of marriage. It shifted over time. In the ancient times, polygamy and concubinage were fine. But, by the time of Paul, it was no longer acceptable.

The writers of the bible assume the larger cultural definition of marriage.

But, I think the bible calls us Christians to be “Christ-like” within whatever society calls marriage: loving; respectful; honest; patient; etc.

The evolution of my personal faith has led me to view the Bible as a reflection of the culture and era rather than directly spoken/inspired to men by God, which is why I asked. Many of my friends are spiritually conservative and I have a hard time trying to explain my position. There are so many beautiful and comforting words and ideas in the Bible, yet being right continues to be more important than doing the right thing.

I don’t know about that issue, but when the Puritans came here, they saw marriage as not a matter for the church. They brought their Dutch ways with them. Many had left England to move to Holland and then were upset that their kids were becoming Dutch, losing English and their religious views. Plus there was a depression going on and many had less work so they were eager to find a new world where they might support their family and keep them isolated. Marriage was about property and providing support for kids.

But watch out in the public bathroom, they think that is where the pervs are. From what I see in this article, it seems like they are in some of the churches.

    • Roctuna May 5th, 2016 at 07:57

There’s always been more pervs in church than just about anyplace else.

I don’t understand how this isn’t selling a daughter into sex slavery, which last time I checked, was seriously illegal. I’d also wager that more than a few of these fine dads exercise jus primae noctis, i.e. the right to the first night, before they hand the girls over to their sons.

      • Mensa Member May 6th, 2016 at 00:54

        >> I don’t understand how this isn’t selling a daughter into sex slavery, which last time I checked, was seriously illegal.

If giving your 13 year old daughter into marriage isn’t illegal, it should be.

In ancient, primitive times, it was all about fertility. If a girl was past puberty, she was a “woman.”

But, thanks to modern psychology, we now know that isn’t true. Teen girls who are fully capable of reproducing are still not women emotionally.

But James Dobson-style fertility cultists live in a very ancient world.

        • clemans May 6th, 2016 at 09:51

the human brain isn’t fully developed until it is about 25-30 yrs old. They want them married off before they can think for themselves.

  6. CHOCOL8MILK May 4th, 2016 at 22:34

    Family values!

  7. Mensa Member May 4th, 2016 at 23:43

    >> Quiverfull patriarch,

    Let me break this down:

“Quiverfull” and many “family values” conservatives are a fertility cult.

These guys have tried to put a Christian veneer on it — but they come from a much older, pagan tradition. Perhaps the oldest of all religions.

And, BTW: this is why they hate homosexuals so much. Gays don’t reproduce. The fertility cult is all about reproduction.

    • fahvel May 5th, 2016 at 03:10

how in the world do you end up with some idiotic blather about paganism and its oldness – the fkn word is just a sound that refers to nothing specific.

    • whatthe46 May 5th, 2016 at 09:41

I wouldn’t say it’s because gays don’t reproduce. because that’s not a fact. most likely it’s because they hate themselves, a lot of them are gay.

      • Mensa Member May 5th, 2016 at 09:55

        >> I wouldn’t say it’s because gays don’t reproduce. because that’s not a fact

You’re thinking like a modern person. Fertility cults like “Quiverfull,” polygamists and similar are about men reproducing as much as possible.

This would include concubinage and very young brides, etc. They are even pre-nuclear family.

And they are certainly against egalitarian couples which — yikes! — can include the gays.

        • whatthe46 May 5th, 2016 at 10:09

if you preach day in and out against it, then it’s likely you’re what you despise the most. furthermore, to them, being a pedophile isn’t bad but gay is.

          • Bunya May 5th, 2016 at 13:31

That’s because “God hates f@gs”. Pedophiles? Not so much.

            • clemans May 6th, 2016 at 09:49

that would be the Catholic god in particular. They are fighting states that are trying to extend the time limit on filing charges for sexual abuse of kids to protect priests.

          • Mensa Member May 6th, 2016 at 00:40

            >> if you preach day in and out against it, then it’s likely you’re what you despise the most.

I put it differently: people don’t get all hot and lathered about stuff that isn’t personal for them.

But, in the case of the “Quiverfull” fertility cult, I think something else is going on.

Fertility cult Christians are all about men putting their “seed” inside women. It’s the main point of marriage. It’s the main purpose of society. It’s the main point of life.

Homosexuality. Transgenderism. What sociologists call “egalitarian pair bonding.” (aka a marriage of equals)

It’s all a huge threat to their worldview.

Now here’s some real Bible thumpin’ Trump supporters I will bet….

  9. fahvel May 5th, 2016 at 03:08

if local authorities don’t raid and arrest these psychopaths for child abuse, everyone in the state – hell, the country – should be shamed.

“Quiverfull parents will spend three days “networking” with similarly-delusional zealots”
Networking? Pffffffft Why buy the cow when the milk is right there.

    • clemans May 6th, 2016 at 09:46

these parents should be charged with child abuse.

  11. Barbara_OBrien May 6th, 2016 at 10:42

Aren’t there laws that would stop this?
