Conservatives Incensed With Serena Williams Choice As Sportsperson Of The Year

They prefer a horse.

…conservatives and others are incensed that the publication chose to honor Williams rather than horse-racing triple crown winner American Pharoah.

American Pharoah won a readers’ poll for the honor, but Sports Illustrated chose instead to crown Williams, who posed on the cover draped over a golden throne.

“She was the most deserving person for the award. She had an amazing year. The way she won her events; the fact that she’s done this for so many years at such a high level,” said Paul Fichtenbaum — editor of the Sports Illustrated Group — to USA Today. “She was a terrific candidate in a year of terrific candidates.”

Not everyone was pleased with the choice, however.

    • Boltorama December 14th, 2015 at 13:40

It can diminish but it will never go away.

I will be happier if it wasn’t so acceptable.

Well the bright side is that most of Trump’s followers need a walker to get out of bed. Their time on this earth is limited and the next generation tends to more progressive than the previous one.

They wanted a HORSE chosen as Sports PERSON of the year, instead of a BLACK PERSON. Am I understanding this correctly? I thought so.

    • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 14th, 2015 at 13:08

And they claim same-sex marriage will lead to liberals wanting to marry animals. Haha, yeah right. Not with these inbred fools casting googly eyes at equines.

  4. Larry Schmitt December 14th, 2015 at 12:59

American Pharoah’s response of course, is “Neigh!”

  5. Larry Schmitt December 14th, 2015 at 13:14

Whenever these losers see a strong (not just physically) black woman, their only defense is to ridicule her as a man. They have done the same with Michelle Obama. They have real problems with their masculinity, when a strong woman can challenge it.

They probably wanted MR Cheater of the year Tom Brady

Believe me, the vast majority of people, conservative or otherwise, couldn’t care less. Is American Pharoah a horse? The name sounds familiar. I didn’t know there was a sportsperson of the year. I’m sure most American don’t know it, either.

  9. Boltorama December 14th, 2015 at 13:39

Do the RWNJS know that the owner of American Pharaoh is an Egyptian?

  10. toadUso December 14th, 2015 at 13:55

SportsPERSON. Either a compound word is too much for conservatives or, like corporations, horses are now people.

Meanwhile, Time ignored their poll in selecting the Person Of the Year. Bernie Sanders won the poll, but lost not only to Angela Merkel who was named #1, but he wasn’t on the short list of 8. Trump was. Go figure.

    • William December 14th, 2015 at 14:20

      ” horses are now people”
      So are corporations.

    • Larry Schmitt December 14th, 2015 at 14:41

The closest SI came in the past was when they named Steve Cauthen, a jockey, in 1977.

      • burqa December 14th, 2015 at 16:10

In 1973 Secretariat won the award. I was one of those who disagreed at the time, but have come to change my mind. I think some conservatives objecting may be thinking of that as a way to object to a black woman getting the award.

American Pharoah, like Secretariat, won the Triple Crown. The comparisons in terms of achievement end there. I would challenge anyone who has not seen it to view a replay of Secretariat’s victory at the Belmont to take the Triple Crown. Even those who do not care for horse racing are usually impressed and enjoy seeing that one and can appreciate why many feel Secretariat is the greatest thoroughbred racehorse of all time.
Big Red won by over 30 lengths. One of the things I enjoy seeing in the replay is how the cameraman has to widen the view in order to keep Secretariat and the pack in the screen together.
I’m not positive, but I believe Secretariat set records at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont that still stand.
It was because Secretariat’s athletic achievement was so singularly spectacular that he won the award, and also why humans have won the award all other times.
Even though American Pharoah also won the Triple Crown and it has been a couple decades since this was last done, his performance can not be compared to Secretariat’s.

Serena Williams, on the other hand, at 34, won the U.S. Open, the French and the Australian, giving her 21 Grand Slam titles, if I recall correctly. She has had such a spectacular career she may well go down in history as the greatest female tennis player of all time. Giving her the award is appropriate, given her performance this year combined with what it means in reference to the greater context of the sport.

        • Larry Schmitt December 14th, 2015 at 16:46

Nope, Jackie Stewart, the British race driver won it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_Illustrated_Sportsman_of_the_Year

          • burqa December 14th, 2015 at 17:50

You are correct (I checked SI because I do not regard as valid a site that said former Brit PM Tony Blair’s middle name is “Whoop-Dee-Do.” Many other silly errors like that have been found there, this one is my personal favorite).
It must’ve been someone else like Time or the AP, it’s been so long I’ve forgotten who gave the award.

Though I was in error on this detail, my argument remains correct, in my opinion.
For a race horse to get such an award, it takes a spectacular performance such as that of Secretariat’s, and American Pharoah did not reach that level, in my opinion.
Williams deserves the award she won.

            • Larry Schmitt December 14th, 2015 at 17:58

I agree. Before I checked, I thought he had won it too. He was named greatest athlete to wear number 2. And for the record, Wiki is doing their best to eliminate frivolous edits like you mentioned. You must admit, it’s convenient.

              • burqa December 14th, 2015 at 19:50

It is convenient, but no more than other sites where the info is from experts in the field..
Yes, I have heard wiki is trying to tighten things up and has some sections where qualified people are allowed to make entries.
There was a time when it was a popular game on Capitol Hill for staffers to put bogus info in the entries for their political opponents.

I find the idea of wiki interesting. One field of interest to me is history – I live in an area dripping with it. I know some local amateur historians who are incredible.
But with wiki, there are entries made by people like these amateur historians who know their stuff, but wiki also attracts people with an agenda, emboldened by the anonymity.

There are not many issues where all the facts and reasonable points are only found on one side. So it can come down to dueling sources.
So what I try to do is always go to the best authorities on a particular subject. On warfare, I’ll often start with Sun Tsu, Clausewitz, and Jomini. Recently what I brought to a discussion on fighting the Islamic State was quotes from David Galula, one of the recognized experts in counterinsurgency warfare.
On the subject of prisoner interrogation and whether we should have adopted torture and abuse of prisoners, I have researched the topic beginning with the experts in the field – professional career interrogators with the US military, FBI, CIA and others such as the British MI5. Many of my sources are not just interrogators, but interrogators who were promoted to be instructors.

Not only do I bypass wiki, I also avoid ideologically slanted websites, liberal or conservative. I get little from the internet at all. I prefer books by recognized authorities.
One thing I try to do is remain flexible when ity is not a topic I have spent a lot of time on. So if you see me saying things like, “as I recall” or “it seems to me”, I am trying to convey a lack of certainty.

                • Larry Schmitt December 14th, 2015 at 20:38

I have seen the Secretariat races. I believe all three records still stand. He was remarkable. The Belmont is always special because it’s longer than the others, and that’s where he showed how great he was. If he had been named Athlete of the Year, I would have had no problem with it.

                  • burqa December 16th, 2015 at 18:20

His owners, the Chenery’s, raised him at The Meadow, which is just down the road a ways from here. I never had a chance to meet them, but have known several people who knew them well.
Years later the mansion burned down and the property was sold.
The new owners built a new, different styled mansion there that has the finest carpentry I have ever seen in it. Sometimes we carpenters will do something only other carpenters will pick up, sort of trash-talking with wood, and that house now has stuff in it that blows my mind.
Eventually the State Fair of Virginia acquired the property.
They have preserved Secretariat’s stall and the rest of the building it was in and about 5 years ago they brought in a descendant of Secretariat who was headed for the glue factory.

    • burqa December 14th, 2015 at 15:56

“Sportsperson” is too clunky anyway. “Athlete” would be a better word.
