Trump: Bergdahl Should Have Been Executed
We don’t need trials in this country as long as Donald Trump can sit in judgement.
“We’re tired of Sgt. Bergdahl, who’s a traitor, a no-good traitor, who should have been executed,” Trump said to cheers at a rowdy rally inside a packed Las Vegas theater at the casino-hotel Treasure Island.
“Thirty years ago,” Trump added, “he would have been shot.”

Thirty years ago, Reagan was president. Reagan had many faults, but I honestly can’t remember an instance where a member of the United States military was summarily executed during his tenure.
Maybe Trump is confused, and is thinking of Germany about 70+ years ago.

It might explain his garish tastelessness.
Even in the Second World War, not many American deserters were shot. But I think Trump and his dad had sympathies for the other side.

The UCMJ requires a trial and conviction before execution. There has only been one soldier court-martialed and executed for desertion since the Civil War, and that was back during WWII. It seems that dressing up in costumes and marching around at school doesn’t actually teach you about the military or history.
