NSA Loses Authority

After Midnight Sunday, the National Security Agency will no longer have the authority to collect the phone records of Americans in bulk.

But that program and several other post-Sept. 11 counter-terror measures look likely to be revived in a matter of days. With no other options, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, in an about-face, reluctantly embraced a House-passed bill that would extend the anti-terror provisions that expire Sunday at midnight, while also remaking the bulk phone collections program.

Although the lapse in the programs may be brief, intelligence officials warned that it could jeopardize Americans’ safety and amount to a win for terrorists. But civil liberties groups applauded as Paul, who is running for president, forced the expiration of the once-secret program made public by NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which critics say is an unconstitutional intrusion into Americans’ privacy.

The Senate voted 77-17 to move ahead on the House-passed bill, the USA Freedom Act, which only last weekend fell three shorts vote of the 60 needed to advance in the Senate…

“It’s not ideal but, along with votes on some modest amendments that attempt to ensure the program can actually work as promised, it’s now the only realistic way forward,” McConnell said.

good, and every american should continue to maintain the death of their fn spy system – who the hell does any govt think they are (except of course N. Korea) It’s no different than spying on ones wife while she’s in the toilette.

After rand claimed every senator was hoping for another 9/11 to prove that he is wrong for wanting this program to end. He is trying so hard to be relevant he is destroying any chance he may of once had. Not to mention the crap his dad is peddling in his commercials how if you pay him $19.99 now, he will tell you how to survive the apocalypse.

To be fair, he isn’t doing anything out of character for him either.
He’s always been against the NSA phone collections.

His audience are Libertarian Republicans, the standard GOP aren’t really his core supporters.
(Think of his recent comment about GOP hawks being the reason ISIS exists.)

Granted, he won’t win without them, but at least he’s sticking to what he believes in.
Even if he is a plagiarist who pursues libertarian ideals to a fault.
