Watch: Governor Jay Nixon Declares State Of Emergency, Curfew In Ferguson

Posted by | August 16, 2014 17:07 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon (D) just held a news conference to declare a state of emergency. This move follows just two days after the Missouri State Highway Patrol took over the supervision of security in the St. Louis suburb.  A curfew will be established in the town which is roiled in the wake of  the death of an unarmed black teenager at the hands of a police officer.

Nixon’s announcement declaring a state of emergency sparked anger with community members at the press conference. Shouting matches ensued with angry citizens demanding answers. One woman yelled out, “Excuse me Governor, but you need to charge that officer with murder.”

The curfew is to last from midnight to 5:00 a.m., according to Capt. Ronald Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, who spoke at the press conference as well.

“What we’re doing now is not who we are,” Johnson said while community members shouted during the press conference.

Johnson added that no tear gas would be used to enforce the curfew.

Anger erupted after  police finally released the name of the officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown , then went on to allege the teenager robbed a store before he was shot down.

Nixon also says the U.S. Department of Justice is  investigating the shooting and FBI agents would be in Ferguson working on the investigation. .

Last night, after about 24 hours of peaceful protesting, looters surfaced to target stores, but they were met with demonstrators who guarded the entrances of business to keep them secure.

Nixon’s announcement went over as well as tear gas hurled at peaceful protesters. The Ferguson police department needs to be forthcoming if they want peace.

“Everybody calm down. We are only declaring a state of emergency because we want to shift the media’s attentions off of the murderous cop and onto further stereotyping black people as thugs, animals and criminals who deserve to die.”

    – Gov. Jay Nixon

Wow, this really is more than a Republican governor would do!

    • Carla Akins August 16th, 2014 at 17:16

Come on, by now you should know he practically is a Republican.

      • NW10 August 16th, 2014 at 17:17

Actually no Republican would talk to President Obama on the phone, save for maybe Chris Christie.

All those veto overrides must be pulling him over to our side of the aisle.

        • Carla Akins August 16th, 2014 at 17:27

Usually he compromises one bill for another – which is why women’s issues get the shaft all the time (no pun intended there) but on occasion he rises to the veto – but face it, it’s fairly easily overridden. What, everything but the own a ballistic weapon bill and the budget.

            Ok, got that.

but on occasion he rises to the veto

            Every pun intended :P

Governor Nixon has been a good friend to liberal causes since the 1990’s and back when I worked in politics he was a key organizer and fund raiser. He canvassed neighborhoods for Democrats. He raised money for us. He worked his butt off for our party. The fact that he has now received a reputation as a selfish player who only serves his own political interests flies in the face of everything I saw him work for. As the leader of an overwhelming red state he his not going be able to move mountains.

As a voter and a woman in the state of MO, I can tell you that he is not much of a friend to his female constituents. I actually like the fact that he is good at compromise – it’s just every time he gives something up, it’s a women’s issue. I swear he’s a secret Catholic.

I feel for the guy. I, too, put a huge amount of time and effort in to knocking on doors and stuffing envelopes for liberal causes and have been repeatedly told by people (not you Carla) that I am no longer welcome in the party because now that they are in power they don’t need me anymore.

That sucks, and should never happen. In the overall scheme of things, I think he mostly a decent man that ran for office for the right reasons. It is very difficult to remember these things, during times like this.

    • Eric Trommater August 16th, 2014 at 17:20

I see what you did there, oh sarcastic one.

Jay Nixon is a Democrat doing a great Gov. Wallace impression for the benefit of his election chances in the 2016 cycle.

Lends a whole new meaning to the phrase, “Nixon’s the one!”

      • Eric Trommater August 16th, 2014 at 18:00

What is he running for in 2016? He’s term limited out as Governor and already endorsed Hilary for president.

I am pretty comfortable in the assertion that last responsibility for nights violence and the resulting curfew today – lies at the feet of Captain Tom Jackson and his Friday afternoon press conference.

This had to be done. Hopefully this stops the looters and the militant cops.

It could get worse. Now people are going to be sneaky, they were out in the open. This could backfire in a really bad way.

I worry that this is just going to make the anger and mistrust in the community stronger. How do you restore trust by increasing police power? It’s so counterproductive.

As Governor, Nixon has the responsibility to make the best judgments possible for the safety of all the citizens. The curfew is a reasonable way to do this. The whole police department & their ability to intervene with citizens appropriately does need to be addressed. Police brutality is unacceptable anywhere. We saw this with Occupy & many times in the past. Pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets, tanks, machine guns are inappropriate weapons for those who are demonstrating. These are not harmless & may kill people. Arrest the ones who are stealing & leave the others alone.
If something is being covered up this needs to come out. Looting & damaging property & putting lives in danger is not going to bring good to anyone. It will further feed racial hatred. The peaceful demonstrators who protected the store fronts deserve praise. I hope the truth will come out as soon as possible & charges filed. Yes, racial profiling is rampant in MO but violence from either side will only make it worse.

We saw this with Occupy & many times in the past. Pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets, tanks, machine guns, etc are inappropriate weapons for crowd control. These are not harmless & may kill more people. Arrest the ones who are stealing & leave the others alone. The local government should assist store owners & businesses to bar their windows & doors. It worked in Cleveland years ago. If necessary place an officer at each door.

People who live in these conditions resort to violence because of the rage they feel for being denied opportunities. They turn to drugs, alcohol & rebellion to cope. It is generational & will continue until despair & suffering are no longer what they see as their future.
