Springer Moving To Stamford; Pastor Up In Arms

Jerry Springer, along with Steve Wilkos and Maury Povich, are moving their shows to a theater in Stamford, Connecticut.  The Reverend Stephen DiGiovanni of St. John’s Catholic Church (right) is trying to block the Springer show from making the move, saying he he is “making millions on other peoples’ misery and stereotypes.”

Subject to negotiations, Springer’s show will move from Chicago this summer into a new studio in Stamford. The city is in Fairfield County, one of the nation’s richest regions and the inspiration for the film “The Stepford Wives.”

The strippers, cheaters and skinheads on Springer’s show often come from low-income backgrounds and reinforce negative attitudes about the poor, DiGiovanni said.

Springer himself calls his show “silly” and says he’d never watch it, that it’s not geared to him.  He also makes the point that there should be a place on television for those who aren’t upper crust, that television shouldn’t be restricted to only certain types of people. 

When objectors like Reverend DiGiovanni make an issue of Springer, aren’t they only drawing attention to something that would otherwise be ignored?  And is a television show in a local theater that features dysfunctional people really bad for the neighborhood?
