House Rejects Raising Debt Ceiling In Admittedly Meangless Vote
In a sign of just how politically motivated and unserious the proposal was, its chief sponsor, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.), took to the floor Tuesday evening and said, “This vote, a vote based on legislation I have introduced, will and must fail.”
“Now, most members aren’t happy when they bring a bill to the floor and it fails, but I consider defeating an unconditional increase to be a success, because it sends a clear and critical message that the Congress has finally recognized we must immediately begin to reign in America’s affection for deficit spending,” Camp said, according to prepared text he distributed.
He also made calls to Wall Street to assure them this was nothing more than theater — a message echoed throughout GOP leadership.
