Congressman Fred Upton Says He Has Votes To Repeal Health Care Law

Michigan Congressman Fred Upton says he has bipartisan support to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and that a vote will take place before the president’s State of the Union address.

“Watch what happens,” Upton said on “Fox News Sunday.” “There will be a significant number of Democrats, I think, that will join us.”

The Republicans’ pledge to hold an early vote to repeal the health care law is widely seen as symbolic. Republicans reason that the voters who gave them the House majority in November expect them to at least go on record against the health law in the next session, though congressional rules make it highly unlikely that they’ll be able to overturn it while a Democratic president is in office.

Republicans will have a steep hill to climb, given that many who oppose the Affordable Care Act don’t think it’s liberal enough. The Senate is not likely to follow the House on this, and there will likely not be enough votes to override a presidential veto. And, the bill contains many popular items, such as more insurance company regulations and the the requirement that there be no punishment for preexisting conditions.
