Ingmar Guandique Convicted In Death Of Chandra Levy

Salvadoran immigrant Igmar Guandique has been convicted by a Washington jury of first degree murder in the 2001 death of former congressional intern Chandra Levy.

Mr. Guandique, an immigrant from El Salvador, is already in prison, serving a 10-year sentence for assaults on two other women in Rock Creek Park, near where Ms. Levy’s remains were found more than a year after she was reported missing. Ms. Levy, 24, had been jogging in the park on May 1, 2001 when she disappeared.

In the original investigation, the police questioned [Congressman Gary] Condit, Democrat of California, and he eventually acknowledged that he and Ms. Levy had been in a relationship. Though he was cleared of being a suspect in the case, the intense negative publicity at the time ended his political career.

It was nearly eight years after her remains were found before the police charged Mr. Guandique in the case. An inmate who served time with Mr. Guandique in federal prison in 2006 said Mr. Guandique had admitted killing Ms. Levy.
