Nevada Tea Party Chairman Quits; Upset With Ashjian Leak

Syd James, head of the Nevada Tea Party, is quitting after his candidate, Scott Ashjian (pictured), leaked a private meeting between Ashjian and GOP candidate Sharron Angle.  Many tea partiers think Ashjian is a progressive plant.

Tea party activists who support Ms. Angle say that Mr. Ashjian, a former asphalt contractor, is not legitimately of the movement. They accuse him of being a “progressive plant” recruited by Democrats to split the vote so that Mr. Reid will win (Mr. Ashjian denies this, and points out, correctly, that Tea Party activists often insist that in their grassroots ethos, anybody can claim to be a “Tea Party leader.”)

The Tea Party Express, a group run by Republican consultants out of California that has been spending against Mr. Reid for more than a year, ran ads telling Mr. Ashjian to “Get lost.” (“None of us has ever heard of you,” Mark Williams, the chairman of the Tea Party Express — not himself a local — scolded in one ad.) Mr. James endorsed Ms. Angle in a statement, and said Mr. Ashjian had violated the terms of what was to be a private conversation
