Stop Trump effort within striking distance

They’re within striking distance of a vote on a measure that would challenge his nomination.

That’s more than halfway to the 28 votes Trump detractors would need to produce a minority report on their proposal, which would give it a vote on the convention floor. At least four more delegates are undecided, while the positions of another 24 remain unknown and 68 have either gone on-record as opposed or their history of support for Trump suggests they would be.

The effort could get a boost from Utah Sen. Mike Lee and his wife, two delegates on the Rules Committee that both the Trump campaign and Free the Delegates operatives expect to vote in favor of the conscience clause. Lee was an early endorser and remains a good friend of Sen. Ted Cruz, and remains fiercely critical of the presumptive GOP nominee.

Lee’s support could give cover to undecided delegates wary of backlash from GOP leaders and sway some undecideds.

But a top strategist involved in the Trump campaign’s delegate operations expressed confidence the proposal would die in the committee, saying the Free the Delegates movement has a “continually lessening chance” of success.

“We’re peeling people off” with their whip efforts, the strategist said.

If anti-Trump forces do get a minority report in hand, the movement would need majority support from the full convention on the floor — and they insist they have the votes. Dane Waters, the lead strategist for a supportive group called Delegates Unbound that’s organizing the group’s whip effort, confirmed an internal survey done by the group that found about 72 percent of the delegates they polled — a number he pegged around 1,400 — believe they’re unbound, and want a candidate other than Trump.

“There’s no doubt that there are enough delegates to deny Donald Trump the nomination if the vote were held today. These delegates want to choose somebody else, and even if they don’t choose somebody else, I think one thing that’s important is that they choose to abstain,” he said.

Hogwash…this things gonna happen…these people are delusional or merely trying to pump the media for free press.

It could happen, but it’s highly unlikely…
I suggest no one hold there breath in anticipation….:)

I tend to agree with you. It would be pretty fun to watch a big fight with Trump left standing there withering and then lose it. Paul Ryan sure wants to be the hero there if it does.
But I don’t think it will be successful, even if they try.

When Ryan takes the stage in Ohio next week, it will effectively be the end of his political career…and he knows it. If Trump wins the general, he’ll become an uncontrollable Orange Hulk. If he loses, the images of Ryan backing an overt anti government, constitutionally ignorant, inexperienced, unpatriotic, buffoon, totally lacking in character, with zero experience at anything other than ripping people off, will never be forgotten.

Ryan knows this…he belongs to a party of morons who would make a clown the leader of the free world…and it will be largely his fault…

All that considered, then why the hell did he endorse him? This election is anything but normal. Why not continue in that mode and not endorse knowing the damage if he does? I’m sure there is a political calculation somewhere in it. I don’t think I see it. Unless he thinks that, as you described, Orange Hulk will be somewhat easier to deal with if he doesn’t have a vendetta against him for not endorsing.
One thing I know for sure, Boehner is enjoying all of this as a free man. I wonder if he is still drunk all the time?

Simple, he’s facing a challenge at home from a Trump like challenger…to reject Trump openly is to push more voters towards the Nehlen camp…this is an anti-establishment crowd if you haven’t noticed…the only people they hate more then dems are repubs who right now are playing the part of useful idiots to the TeaParty like movement sweeping the right…
            JMO of course..

That does shed a little different light on it. Ryan is in a damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t type situation. It makes more sense now.

538 had them just a couple point apart (Ryan on top) but within the stat dev…he could easily lose…which made me think last month he would try and vie for the VP slot…but no one who scolds Trump is ever allowed back in and Ryan committed seppuku within days of Trump wrapping up the primaries…

If they were successful, wouldn’t that invalidate the entire primary process? Which means they would have spent many millions of dollars, and eaten all those corn dogs, for nothing.

I don’t see this happening unless one of the original 18 gets chosen as the nominee

And when they fail, they’ll be saying:

“…but there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Casey has struck out.”
