Oklahoma State Rep Sally Kern Wants To Restrict Divorce

Sally Kern, who reveled in pointing out that homosexuality was once illegal, said homosexuality is a bigger threat than Islam,  and who promoted the “Oklahoma Proclamation for Morality,” has proposed a bill to restrict divorce in Oklahoma.

Under the Republican’s legislation, a judge in Oklahoma would not be able to grant a divorce on the grounds of incompatibility if the couple has a child, the marriage has lasted longer than 10 years or either party objects to the breakup.

Kern said something has to be done to preserve marriages across the state. In Oklahoma, about 40 percent of marriages end in divorce.

“A marriage, it’s a building block of society. It’s serious business,” Kern said.

However, the primary reason for the legislation is children, she said.

There is an out, however:

Under her bill, Kern said, couples would still be able to get divorced on the grounds of adultery, abandonment and neglect of duty.

If passed, the bill would take effect on Nov. 1.
