Michael Goldman, a Boston political consultant who has worked for several of the leading names, said the criteria for choosing the interim senator appears to be relatively straightforward.

 

“It has to be one of the grey eminences of the party whose active elective career is over,” Goldman said. “And someone who could get through a quick vetting process without embarrassing the governor.
