WATCH: Trump voters in coal country worried they’ve voted away their health care

Posted by | January 1, 2017 07:51 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Contrary to what many of us liberals think, Trump voters in coal country aren’t dumb. They know they’re screwed without healthcare, they know they get it through Obamacare, and they know the GOP is champing at the bit to repeal it. So why the hell did so many of them vote for Donald Trump? Because he…

most of my friends who have the Black Lung Benefit, have died already, of the disease…I have had to get chest x-rays every year for Black Lung…I watched as several of my old buddies, slowly suffocated..Their wives had to watch the gradual disintegration of a once proud and strong man…Coal Country, It doesn’t matter which coal field you visit, from Appalachia to Utah, there are many old coal miners, who have been screwed over by coal mine operators, by corrupt republican governors, and by the republicans within the Federal Government…It is what it is…but lets put the blame squarely where it belongs…THE REPUBLICAN PARTY…

    • jybarz January 1st, 2017 at 08:57

Good luck. I hope you’ll be OK!

      • Buford2k11 January 1st, 2017 at 09:10

so far, so good…they found some stuff that didn’t look all that good in the last set of x-rays…but they said it didn’t look like it was getting bigger or looking to be a problem right now…I used dust protection and I used hearing protection for the last part of my career…In the early days, there were no real protections, other than the UMWA…the regulations, which are written by Congress, were weak, and were not fully complied with by the mine owners…we used to joke about what makes a good coal miner…we always said it was to have a Strong back and a weak mind to be a coal miner…little did I know…

You know, not for nothing, but coal companies have been screwing over their workers for more than a couple of centuries, and possibly since the beginning of time, so the question needs to be asked how many miners have to die before people start taking a hint?

      • Buford2k11 January 2nd, 2017 at 09:13

some folks are aware of the problem…it is congress who writes the laws, funds MSHA…Mining, Safety, and Health Administration…Most of us miners used to be wary of the inspectors, until we realized that they were on our side, and the laws they were following were written in the blood of my brother and sister miners…Congress has tried to protect us from the bastard owners, but failed in ways that never made sense to me…Blankenship, is just one example of how this nation failed her workers…he killed people, for his greed and he is not paying the price for his evil, yet…

        • Willys41 January 2nd, 2017 at 20:43

Frankly, I’d be surprised if MSHA, OSHA, and all the rest still exist under Trump and his cronies. None of them give a damn about anything but putting money in their pockets.

the poor, uneducated in the coalfields of Appy will NEVER get the “hint” – they can’t even accept FACTS because they’re from the MSM or WaPo. I saw a while back a lady in WV who was TICKED at MSHA for closing the mine her hubby AND son worked at because “they said it was unsafe” (numerous safety violations that weren’t corrected), and she BLAMED OBAMA for them being in a pickle. SMH.

            • Willys41 January 8th, 2017 at 08:23

They don’t want to face up to anything that’s going to have any impact whatsoever on their way of life. So safety regulations are just bullcrap. Climate change is bullcrap. Anything that means they have to get off their butts and do something to improve themselves is simply bullcrap. They are, in effect, “welfare queens.” They send their men into the mines and that’s the way life should be forever and ever no matter what.

These poor ignorant folks only have themselves and their bigotry to blame.
They’ve always voted against their own interests just to keep those brown people from getting any benefits and the GOP knows it’ll work every time.

  4. Budda January 1st, 2017 at 08:31

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get it….but apparently the coal country folk don’t. Screw em. People that vote against their own best interests and then rue the day are dumb and deserve what they voted for. No sympathy from me.

    Happy New Year!

But, but Greg Sargent and the other print “journalists” nor the talking heads ever pressed him on replacing it with WHAT and therein lies the problem, they like the Dems and Repubs are afraid of him and allowed him to ramble on. The coal miners are out of touch with reality like so many others. China and India have been reducing their reliance on the coal industry so bring back what jobs? I’ve known this why don’t they? They have been receiving extra benefits if they had black lung disease, their wives had widow’s benefits upon their deaths. What now that the Repubs hold all branches of government? This is going to get interesting since the Repubs have had years to fix ACA or replace it and still have nothing. People including miners only heard what they wanted to hear and consequently weren’t listening to what the politicians were really saying and have therefore continued to vote for the same lying politicians and now the orange orangutan. It’s going to get rougher.

The hatred in their bigoted brains overwhelms their need for protecting their best self interests…hatred that so intense that the blood rush to their stupid heads makes them such shitheads.

  7. oldfart January 1st, 2017 at 10:05

    If you voted for him
you’ll get no pity from me
    OR HIM…
And the sickest part of it all is,
You morans will vote for him again in four years.
There is only one sure cure for your stupidity.

    • Mensa Member January 1st, 2017 at 11:58

      >> There is only one sure cure for your stupidity.

And with untreated black lung, some will get the cure.

But their grieving survivors will still vote Republican.

      • oldfart January 1st, 2017 at 12:05

And will still be blaming Obama for it…

  8. Mensa Member January 1st, 2017 at 11:56

    And even more irritating:

Fox News will convince them it’s Obama’s fault.

These very same people in Kentucky vote Republican every year by the masses – few of which have any idea of why they do it. They have kept McConnell in office for 30 years. He has never done anything of much importance for Kentucky, only the Rich and the Republican of the Nation. And They should fear Trump because he will allow Ryan to not only end the ACA but strip Medicare down to a privatized controlled system that rewards only those that will control it, likely the greedy Wall Street barons. And although I will be hurt also, I can’t help but root for the demise of the social net they have always had, because no group of citizens deserve it more than them. They have lived in a true Democracy and reaped the fruits of it while voting against it.

  10. Mensa Member January 1st, 2017 at 12:06

Trump health care “reform” is to let people buy across lines.

So, can the smart Kentuckians get Obmacare from the states that offer it?

  11. arc99 January 1st, 2017 at 12:20

Let them reap what they have sown. They want Republicans, let them have Republicans as they say good bye to health care and safety regulations. If they want a world where nothing matters more than maximizing coal company profits at the expense of the health and safety of their families and loved ones, let them live in such a world and suffer the consequences. Maybe after a generation grows up watching how their parents are discarded like obsolete spare parts by GOP policy, maybe the next generation will start to make decisions based on what is actually best for them, not what a shill for billionaires tells them is best.

Given that these same people have been doing the same thing for decades, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  12. Warman1138 January 1st, 2017 at 13:14

Hook, line and sinker………all Trump had to do was reel them in and claim bragging rights over such a YUGE catch.

  13. eyelashviper January 1st, 2017 at 14:03

With all the ranting over Obamacare, and complaints over high premiums under it, the Dems make the yuuuggee mistake of not pointing out that the high costs are due to INSURANCE companies hiking rates to make more profits and give their stockholders more dividends. Get rid of that greedy middleman, and health care will be affordable for all.
Again, the GOP defines the terms, goes on the offense, while the Dems sit back and try to swat away the barrage of nonsense being fired at them. All during tRump’s campaign, he promised all the rust belt population new jobs and business, all the while sending buying steel and aluminum from China, while it is still produced on a small level in the area.
Given what the results of a tRump administration will bring, the coal miners will need to worry about far more than the loss of health care…

  14. amersham1046 January 1st, 2017 at 14:33

No jobs, no future and soon no health care, the GOP working for themselves

  15. bpollen January 1st, 2017 at 17:00

I find it a little hard to have much sympathy for their buyer’s remorse. They have and will CONTINUE to vote against their own interests.

If you shoot yourself in the foot once, I’ll drive you to the hospital. If you shoot yourself in the foot a second time, I might… But a third time? Better call Uber, cuz I really don’t give a shite anymore.

Perfect example of PT Barnum’s “there’s a sucker born every second’; YOU BEEN HAD BILLY’S.

    • disqus_I1oXNZSK6M January 8th, 2017 at 05:16

      actually, YOU’VE been had, Dcbos.
That’s NOT the “quote”, AND it wasn’t said by Barnum.
      SUCKER!
