Schumer: GOP efforts to overhaul Medicare will fail: ‘Make our day’

Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is defiant about Republican efforts to privatize Medicare.

“The Republicans’ ideological and visceral hatred of government could deny millions of senior citizens across the country the care they need and deserve,” Schumer said in the statement. “To our Republican colleagues considering this path, Democrats say: make our day. Your effort will fail, and this attack on our seniors will not stand.”

The New York Times reported Thursday that House Republicans plan to move forward on plans to shift Medicare towards a system based on fixed government contributions that Democrats have decried as a “voucherization” of the program.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) brought up his desire to make an overhaul of Medicare one of Congress’ priorities soon after the election. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee, told reporters on Capitol Hill not long after that Republicans were considering moving on major changes to Medicare in the next six to eight months. President-elect Donald Trump waffled on plans to drastically change Medicare during the campaign, but earlier this week, his campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Trump was open to considering Ryan’s proposals as well as other alternatives.

I hope the GOP try. It will make it easier to vote them out of office in upcoming elections. People really hate having things taken from them and that is what the republicans want to do.

Yeah but the mainstream press are so in love with Trump they will spin it to say they are giving us something rather than taking something away.

After all the dust settles and Medicare disappears, you will have millions of senior citizens shopping on their own for health insurance in a market that requires a fair amount of sophistication. They will have nothing except a voucher for maybe $1000 which if they are lucky will cover two months of premiums on the open market.

When Medicare disappears, If this does not convince those “red state” voters to stop voting to cut their own throats, nothing will.

To paraphrase an old political axiom: in a democratic republic, the electoral college will select exactly the kind of leadership deserved by the voters they represent. The majority of us just have to suffer….

One only has to look north of the border and see everybody has health care, without the fear of it being canceled

They won’t do this to our current seniors since most of them will be the ones voting for republicans. They will begin the “voucher program” in a few decades.
