Navy to drop job titles ending in ‘man’

Posted by | September 29, 2016 17:42 | Filed under: War & Peace

The Navy is entering the Twenty-First Century.

The Navy announced Thursday sailors will no longer be addressed by rating or job title but by rank, a significant cultural shift. The Navy called for a review of the titles in January, shortly after all military jobs were ordered to be opened to women.

A chief yeoman will now simply be called a chief, for example. A junior sailor will still be called a seaman, a naval rank steeped in tradition.

Navy leaders say sailors can be assigned multiple occupational specialty codes, which opens up more jobs in the military and more opportunities when they leave. They say this brings the Navy in line with the other services.

Why not, we have only been serving in the Navy for a little over a century.

So, in retrospect, I was a “airperson” before I made petty officer?

Actually the origin of the rating yeoman is interesting. It came from the old days when the Chief would say “Yo man, get over here and type this sh*t up before you secure”. Nonetheless, I think the rating “Torpedopersonsmate” is going to be a tad awkward.

      I became a Not-So-Petty Officer.

I actually found Warrant Officers to be the petty ones.
