Trump faces new questions about charity finances

Posted by | September 27, 2016 19:22 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

If he used his charity as a slush fund to pay taxes he could be in big trouble.

A new Washington Post report this week presented cases where Trump directed third parties to pay monies owed to him or his businesses directly to the Donald J. Trump Foundation–monies that arguably should have been taxed as income to Trump.

The Trump campaign has said that the payments were all aboveboard and proper, and slammed the Post’s reporter for trafficking in speculation about possible but not proven legal problems. All of this comes against the backdrop of Trump refusing to release his tax returns, a stance unprecedented among modern major party presidential nominees. Without those tax returns, the exact handling of the payments and any associated taxes remains murky.

But tax experts interviewed by TPM said the new revelations by the Post include a number of red flags. At best, the practice could be described as sloppy and driven by an extreme ignorance of the law, the experts said. At worst, it fits into a pattern of using the charity as a personal piggy bank. On their own, such allegations could be dealt with a minor slap on the wrist, but coupled with the Post’s previously surfaced examples of Trump using foundation money for his own benefit they fuel major concerns about how Trump’s charity has operated.
Seth Perlman of Perlman and Perlman, a New York City firm that specializes in nonprofit law, said that accusations that Trump was illegally directing fees to his charity are tough to prove and not totally unheard of in the non-profit world.

“It becomes really troubling, however, if he was diverting or pushing fees to a nonprofit and using those fees to benefit himself. That becomes a much more serious problem,” Perlman said.

    Trumps business philosophy seems to be;

If there is a little, take a lot….

And if there is a lot, take it all.

Trump is not aware of any problems , if there is please speak to the flunkies that launder the money

    • whatthe46 September 27th, 2016 at 20:46

tRump knows everything when it comes to his money that’s for damn sure.

  4. StoneyCurtisll September 27th, 2016 at 20:08

    Trump is dirty..
    As dirty as they come…
Remember what brought down the criminal empire of Al Capone?
It wasn’t the bootlegging liquor, or the murders, extortion or prostitution rings, or the bribing of politicians and police…
It was “TAXES” that sent Capone to the slammer…
And it’s going to be Taxes that in the end will finish off Trump..(why else would the IRS have him under investigation for 15 years straight?)

    • whatthe46 September 27th, 2016 at 20:45

i would say that the IRS isn’t doing their job then. is someone getting paid off? 15 yrs under investigation and only now they are about to do their jobs? was it the pressure? people get audited for owing a couple of thousand. this is beyond ridiculous.

      • Larry Schmitt September 28th, 2016 at 07:14

It’s probably more a result of Republicans gutting the IRS budget. They don’t have enough staff to do the job they were created to do: enforcement. If they find a tax cheat, they can’t afford to go after him. Better hope you don’t have to call their help line during tax season, you could be on hold for days. And that’s not an exaggeration. Thousands of people have given up rather than continue to wait, because they simply don’t have enough people.

        • oldfart September 28th, 2016 at 14:17

If they cant beat it out of them in front of congress…
cut off their funding, republican 101.

        • whatthe46 September 28th, 2016 at 15:28

but, they have the time to hassle someone who owes a couple of thousand, when they should direct more of their resources on someone like tRump. i don’t want to hear about a damn audit that’s been going on for 15 yrs w/o any results. it’s stupid.

    • fahvel September 28th, 2016 at 03:05

15 years??? and the results are?????

      • StoneyCurtisll September 28th, 2016 at 18:32

Trump gets away with adultery, cheating on taxes, hiring illegal workers, cheating his subcontractors and investors, misogyny, bigotry, inciting violence and Hillary gets hit for wearing pantsuits, her voice, coughing, emails and her husband’s infidelity. There should be no one voting for this man whose last name is not Trump….and even his daughters should vote for Hillary considering Trump’s treatment of women…including Ivanka’s mother…. and his creepy comments about Ivanka.

And yet again – the ghostly silence surrounding the lawsuit concerning him raping a 12-year old girl – inexplicable unless newspaper owners are complicit in the original crime!

  6. Guy Lauten September 28th, 2016 at 00:14

“That becomes a much more serious problem,” Perlman said.
Yeah, but it’s still a problem that no one is going to do anything about. Why shouldn’t they cheat when there is no downside to it?

  7. jybarz September 28th, 2016 at 06:10

Please get him before Election day.
    Time is quickly running out.
And please, please, please don’t forget to throw away the key once he’s in the clink.

It makes me wonder just how much “foreign” money that they accepted into the slush fund, err, I mean Trump’s Slush Fund….He is a bona fide crook…he is…And I volunteer to give Donnie Jr, a real wedgie…

  9. crc3 September 28th, 2016 at 09:59

Rump has no shame. He’s as crooked as a dog’s hind leg….

    • Robo Rubio September 28th, 2016 at 15:21

Trump is indeed one with no sense of shame at all:

On the Howard Stern show Trump said that he didn’t think it could be said of him that he treated women well.

Politico: “199 Most Donald Trump Things Donald Trump Has Ever Said”: Women: you have to treat em like @#$%.

On Dateline/NBC, October 2004, Trump said that pregnancy is great for the man and woman but is a burden upon employers.

Trump repeatedly humiliated Miss Universe Alicia Machado, saying she was an eating machines, aid that she weighed at one point round 116 pound went up to around 60 pounds and said she liked to eat a lot, called her “Miss Piggy” and in reference to her being Latina, called her “Miss Housekeeping”.

Women who have worked with Trump have said that there was repeated talk about the female form.

Trump was so desperate after his drubbing at the debate with Hillary that he had to reference unreliable online polls where you can vote, refresh,. vote again and so on. He even said that CNS news conducted a poll having him winning when CBS conducted no such poll. One scientific poll (Yougov) had Hillary winning big time….

…Then Trump had to blame being beat in the debate by blaming the mic and the moderator, Lester Holt.

  11. Foundryman September 28th, 2016 at 12:01

Wonder how many people are sweating it who paid trump through his charity then wrote it off there own taxes? It seems this is a scheme to get away with paying taxes for everyone involved.
