Trump to Christians: ‘You’ve been silenced like a child’

Posted by | August 11, 2016 17:22 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Religion

Donald Trump pandered to Christians again Thursday.

“You’ve been silenced like a child has been silenced,” he told the crowd, where he made the bogus claim that pastors are barred from addressing political issues. “Your power has been totally taken away.”

Trump said that “they took away your voice” and he can restore it by repealing the Johnson Amendment, which he claimed will in turn increase church attendance.

He then expressed dismay that people don’t even know what about the existence of Sunday School: “I mean Christianity, when you think of what’s happening and you look at the numbers, I talk about Sunday School and people don’t even know what I’m talking about anymore, it’s true, they don’t even know what I’m talking about.”

“We’re gonna bring it back because it’s a good thing, it’s a good thing,” he said. “They treat it like it’s a bad thing but it’s a great thing, not a good thing, it’s a great thing.”

As if christians have ever been silent on any political issue in our nation.

I had seen that photo before. I decided to ask my friend Mr. Google about its origins. Believe it or not, the photo was taken not in the deep south, but in Oregon, probably Portland.

Not too difficult to believe, since in the 1920’s the Klan was a large, powerful organization. Thousands of them marched in downtown Washington DC

here is a link to some history about the photo. the second link is a NY Times article about the power of the Klan at that time. What interested me most is how the anti-Catholic hysteria is nearly identical to the hate-filled rhetoric now directed at Muslims. Also, Jade Helm style lunacy can also be found.

Did you know that the Holland Tunnel in New York was actually the beginning of a secret passage to transport the Pope from Rome?

      http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/10/when-a-catholic-terrified-the-heartland/?_r=0

The school board of Daytona Beach, Fla., sent a note home with every student. It read simply: “We must prevent the election of Alfred E. Smith to the Presidency. If he is elected President, you will not be allowed to have or read a Bible.” Fliers informed voters that if Smith took the White House, all Protestant marriages would be annulled, their offspring rendered illegitimate on the spot.

Opponents blanketed the country with photos of the recently completed Holland Tunnel, the caption stating that this was the secret passage being built between Rome and Washington, to transport the pope to his new abode. Countless copies of a small cartoon appeared on lampposts and mailboxes everywhere. Titled “Cabinet Meeting — If Al Were President,” it showed the cabinet room, with the pope seated at the head of the table, surrounded by priests and bishops. Over in the corner was Al Smith, dressed in a bellboy’s uniform, carrying a serving platter, on top of which was a jug of whiskey. Summing up, the minister of the largest Baptist congregation in Oklahoma City announced, “If you vote for Al Smith you’re voting against Christ and you’ll all be damned.”

        Thanks for the info.
In catholic grade school the nuns used to send home weekly reminders to our parents to “vote Kennedy”.
When he specifically stated that his religion would have no bearing on his presidency he kind of fell out of favor.

        • Roctuna August 11th, 2016 at 19:08

I remember that exact note being put in my hand in 1st grade

        • fredoandme August 12th, 2016 at 08:24

i went to good old public school. i don’t remember a teacher EVER attempting to influence the vote. not once.

          long ago, and far away.

      • Roctuna August 11th, 2016 at 19:09

I guess they didn’t understand that the pope could get on a boat like anyone else.

        • fredoandme August 12th, 2016 at 08:22

no one but noah had a boat?

          • Roctuna August 12th, 2016 at 11:00

? I don’t understand your question. In the ’30’s air travel wasn’t common but the Pope could have sailed to the US, he didn’t need a secret tunnel like the anti-Catholics were saying.

            • fredoandme August 12th, 2016 at 12:27

Never mind about my question. Seriously, I think it is in the wrong place.

I am not even remotely interested in a pope tunnel scandal. So…..sorry for the mixup.

  2. nola878 August 11th, 2016 at 17:36

Yup. Christians…most persecuted group in the nation.

    Just ask two Corinthians.

  3. Dwendt44 August 11th, 2016 at 17:38

The churches are/were supposed to stay out of endorsing candidates in order to keep their tax exempt status. I’m more that willing to tax them like any other business if they want to play politics.

  4. An American in Canada August 11th, 2016 at 17:43

How about you keep your religious views (no matter which one) to yourself and your church/mosque/synagogue/temple. We don’t need it in our government or in our schools.

BTW..Church attendance is on the decline because people are wising up to the hoax about the sky being who controls all our destiny. It’s not because you’re being oppressed. Welcome to modern civilization.

    You’ve been silenced…good!

  5. TiredOldGuy August 11th, 2016 at 17:46

The majority of my Seniors’ Coffee Club here are christians.
Ain’t none of them silent about anything.

    • Suzanne McFly August 11th, 2016 at 18:08

Yeah, I grew up in the Irish Catholic church and none of them were silent and no politician ever took away their voice, but rumpers live in constant victimization in their own minds.

      • TiredOldGuy August 11th, 2016 at 18:16

Grew up in Cincinnati – predominantly catholic
Now live 5 minutes south in Newport KY – predominately evangelical
It’s like the Ohio River (which is actually owned by KY) is the line of demarcation

  6. LoisB August 11th, 2016 at 18:31

I wonder what “people” besides Trump don’t know about Sunday School?

  7. Gary Parillo August 11th, 2016 at 19:37

Yeah, right little donny.Sunday school is, “great”.Get them when there young! Its a “great” way to fill their minds full of mythologies passed off as truth, and fill their hearts full of guilt that will plague them for years. The guilt and psychological confusion will last for years. The lucky ones will be able as adults to use intellect and critical thinking to shake off the shackles of indoctrination. The unlucky ones will go on to become evangelicai hypocritical right wing nut jobs. Then unfortunately they will breed (with guilt about the sex act) and produce more indoctrinated evangelical wackos that will continue on the proud tradition of destroying free thinking!Yeah, sunday school is great!

“Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind, and unfits it for every noble enterprise” — james Madison. When one suffers from delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from delusion it is called religion.-Robert Pirsig

    • Gary Parillo August 12th, 2016 at 01:51

I just now watched that.I seldom laugh out loud these days, but that did it.That was hilarious! Whoever did that was very clever. His strange speech patterns are perfect for that. Now someone should make one speaking backwards.might be shocking.

    • fahvel August 12th, 2016 at 04:04

drunk or stoned? I did not laugh.

      • whatthe46 August 12th, 2016 at 04:31

then, are you suggesting that’s it’s a mental disease? because that wouldn’t be funny. drunk or stoned, yes, that’s funny.

    • bpollen August 12th, 2016 at 06:06

At full speed, he’s sounding more and more drunk… but your average drunk is more coherent.

  11. MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou August 12th, 2016 at 01:26

Yes, Christians have been silenced. That’s why, according to law, you have to recognize the Christian God in order to serve in the military, become a naturalized citizen, or even pledge allegiance to your country and its flag.

  12. MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou August 12th, 2016 at 01:27

The people he’s talking to that don’t know about Sunday school probably also know a Corinthian or two.

  13. mistlesuede August 12th, 2016 at 01:28

Seriously? STFU you moron. You can’t even kiss the butts of these people correctly.

    • whatthe46 August 12th, 2016 at 01:36

      hahahahaha

      • mistlesuede August 12th, 2016 at 01:46

Just how useless is he? With that mouth, it looks like he is an expert at the job.

  14. bpollen August 12th, 2016 at 06:03

A President Trump might be responsible for higher church attendance. All those people praying for the Rapture to come NOW!!

  15. majii August 12th, 2016 at 14:41

There are at least seven Christian churches within walking distance of my house, and every one of them has Sunday School every Sunday. Again, Trump is lying, and the reason he’s lying about churches not having Sunday School anymore is because he doesn’t attend church.
