Obama pays tribute to slain Dallas officers; ‘act of racial hatred’

Posted by | July 12, 2016 15:40 | Filed under: Politics

President Obama spoke in Dallas today to comfort a grieving community.

In his speech, Obama noted that the protest where the shooting occurred had been peaceful and said the alleged shooter was motivated by hatred for white people.

“I know that Americans are struggling right now with what we have witnessed over the past week,” Obama said. “First, the shootings in Minnesota and Baton Rouge, the protests. Then the targeting of police by the shooter here. An act not just of demented violence, but of racial hatred. All of it left us wounded and angry. And hurt. This is the deepest fault lines of our democracy that have suddenly been exposed, perhaps widened.”

He also nodded to the tension between black Americans and the police, saying that while the protest in Dallas was interrupted by violence, officers had protected protestors even if they “profoundly disagreed” with each other.

“Despite the fact that police conduct was the subject of the protest, despite the fact that their must have been signs or slogans or chants with which they profoundly disagreed, these men and this department did their jobs like the professionals they were,” he said.

Wait for it………the conservative backlash of no tact, honor, sensibility, intelligence, logic and compassion. Before tomorrow starts all sorts of other things will be the presidents fault including this last tragedy.

    President Obama is a romanticist.

That word might not mean what you think.

Think in terms of “wouldn’t it be wonderful if….”

But the repubs love to push back with all the things that devide us and try to tell us that we should not dwell on things we have in common but focus on what makes us different.

    This is our CORE problem..

An executive order should be passed for the NRA spokesman to show up at these memorials No joke

  3. labman57 July 12th, 2016 at 16:31

Could you see Trump giving this speech:
“The police are winners. BLM are a bunch of losers. Thank you and good day.”

    • Gary Parillo July 12th, 2016 at 17:38

Trump could never give such a speech, and would need a telepromter, and can barely read that!

  4. Gary Parillo July 12th, 2016 at 17:33

The President put everything into perspective in a balanced and unifying way.Still, there will be many who will hear only what they want to hear. They listen, but they do not hear! They criticize, but never offer any solutions! They think they are christians, but have only hatred in their hearts! They blame this and blame that, but never take a portion of the blame upon themselves! They are part of the problem, but to ignorant and divisive to observe such within themselves!,What this President just said were words that could heal, but still there will be many that want not healing, and will continue to speak their words that injure and wound.I will miss this President when his term ends!

Some gain power when we are separated, and those are the ones who will help us continue to focus on differences.

      • Gary Parillo July 12th, 2016 at 17:43

That is the ploy all dictators have used. That is the ploy Trump uses, whether he knows it or not!Trump is a divider, yet turns that around and accuses President Obama of such.God help us all if he becomes the next pres.

        • Suzanne McFly July 12th, 2016 at 18:12

Pretty sure we are safe from President Trump. I won’t stop my fight to get people to vote though.

          • Gary Parillo July 12th, 2016 at 18:39

They say the rebubs win elections by voting in overwhelming numbers.Lets hope the dems understand that, and come out in force to vote. There is so much at stake this Nov.The supreme court will be standing in the balance! All Trump surrounds himself with are far right evangelical wackos who want a theocracy. Can you imagine what the supreme court will look like lf he is pres.?? I have my issues with Hillary, but she will at least move us forward in the domestic social arena.I was a Bernie supporter, and hope his supporters will weigh it all in proper balance and give her their vote.

            • Suzanne McFly July 12th, 2016 at 21:44

I also was a Bernie supporter, but I will happily vote for Hillary over Trump.

    • Ron Theison July 13th, 2016 at 00:39

No he didn’t. He just had to bring up the divisive political issue of gun control once again at a memorial gathering. Why couldn’t he have just honored the fallen and leave it at that?

      • Gary Parillo July 13th, 2016 at 02:29

I had to read Obamas speech over again to see what you are referring to.He only used one short paragraph out of the entire speech to referance that issue. It seems he used it in the context of various social failings, and simply said it is easier for a teenager to buy a glock than to find a computer. The vast context of his speech was in support of our law enforcement and the hardships they face, and remember,he is a politician, and they all tend to be somewhat long winded.Gun control is currently a major issue with the democrates, but I doubt that any form of gun control would have kept that weapon out of the hands of the Dallas shooter.

        • Red Mann July 13th, 2016 at 11:20

Ron doesn’t do reality, or facts.

      • Red Mann July 13th, 2016 at 11:20

Why can’t you ever say anything intelligent? Your disconnect from reality is astonishing.

      • bunya July 13th, 2016 at 15:10

What don’t you understand? This tragedy wouldn’t have happened if guns weren’t involved. I think it was totally appropriate that he bring up such a much needed talk about gun control.

  5. Suzanne McFly July 12th, 2016 at 17:36

I don’t know why people keep making these two groups on the opposite sides of one another. I am against killing a black man as much as I am against killing a cop. I believe most of us feel that way, but the way it is being reported is you are either with us or against us. We need to get out of our corners and speak to one another.

    • burqa July 14th, 2016 at 19:11

      Beautiful.
The Tea Party has tried to stratify the Right, making them only support one side and we have some Lefties who want us to have our own Tea Party that reflects the worst characteristics of the crazies on the far Right.
Our Leftie crazies are as blind as the Rightie crazies.
For many, many years we differentiated ourselves from the Right because we did nuance.
There are good cops and bad cops. There are good white people and bad ones. There are good African Americans and bad ones.
There is nothing wrong with being for good people, regardless of their race or occupation and being against bad people, regardless of their race or occupation.

      • Suzanne McFly July 15th, 2016 at 10:38

I share these very same sentiments.

  6. Ron Theison July 13th, 2016 at 00:37

Once again, President Obama just could not go to some memorial as the President of us all, to bring us together to honor the fallen, but he had to bring up the divisive issue of gun control – a political issue if there ever was one. Shame on him.

    • Red Mann July 13th, 2016 at 01:14

You are hate filled f*cking moron Ron. If you could feel shame and embarrassment, you would be ashamed of exposing your ignorance and embarrassed by your childish behavior.

      • Ron Theison July 13th, 2016 at 02:27

You have been deluded. It is not just idle words that Obama has been the great divider, the proof comes out in how he acts at these type of things. There is a time for everything, and politics had no place at a memorial event for those fallen officers.

Hey, I read that the cops in attendance did not even clap when he drolled on about the race issue. Time and place my friend, time and place.

        • Gary Parillo July 13th, 2016 at 02:39

Ron, actually there was a roomful of applause after he mentioned the gun issue, but I think you are correct the officer sitting behind him did not clap. But from the sound of the applause, most of the room did,and most of the room was full of leo.Not everyone will agree on everything he said.

        • whatthe46 July 13th, 2016 at 02:59

you’re just pissed that a black man had the audacity to run for the presidency and win twice. and not only that, he had the brilliance to get the job done. and only racist hate when others call them out on their racism. that would be you mr. fruity. you read nothing. just like you believe that tRump saw Muslims, 1000’s of them, dancing on the roof top on 9/11. which was a lie. question mr. fruity, why do you want to see people with brown skin murdered?

        • whatthe46 July 13th, 2016 at 03:02

by the way. you are the deluded one, yet again:

        • whatthe46 July 13th, 2016 at 03:42

you have. why don’t you respond to my post. coward? embarrassed? hate yourself so much, in fact you can’t stand to see your reflection right? my skin is brown, and you despise me for being born, not just beautiful, but, smart, kind and caring. and i am regardless of ones religion or ethnicity. you are so pitiful, because you can’t even begin to be as blessed as i am.

          • burqa July 14th, 2016 at 19:14

            Brown is beautiful.
            I like brown.
            I like it a lot.
I like beautiful, smart and caring just as much.
I like sharing this country with you.

        • Red Mann July 13th, 2016 at 11:18

Your are an ignorant fool who believes the crap the RWNALM puts out. It is the righties driving the racial division and hatred. Basically they’re upset because a black man got elected as President of the White States of America, from their point of view “There’s a Ni&&er in the WHITE House”. So every time he gives a well thought out, intelligent speech, shows genuine compassion, you righties have to attack him because he scares you sh!tless.

        • burqa July 14th, 2016 at 19:05

If you weren’t so intent on getting your bitch on, there was a great deal of Obama’s speech I bet you would have agreed with. Probably 80% or more of it.

But you can’t whine about that part so you just skip it, because whining is more important than finding solutions or identifying the way we need to go while appreciating the service we get from our po-lice.
Look, I’m a Leftie but above I found it very easy to praise what I heard from former President George W. Bush because not only did I agree with it, but I’m not so rooted in ideology that I felt compelled to find something to criticize him for, because I’m a Leftie and that’s all we do.
          Not me.

If all you do is bitch bitch bitch you’ll never be a part of the solution. You’ll always be someone in the way of the solution….

    • burqa July 14th, 2016 at 18:50

Sooo, you recall when, after Newtown, Obama called for gun control and Trump said, “He speaks for me!”….remember that one?

  7. burqa July 14th, 2016 at 18:57

President Obama was terrific on this one.
We need to ignore those among us who are trying to polarize us. We have them on the Left, no doubt. They talk and reason just like the Right wing Tea Party kooks who only see things in black and white.
President Obama presented a more nuanced view of things more people need to heed.
We can be against racial profiling and po-lice brutality and still support the po-lice. We can be against bad cops and for good ones. We can be for good people abused by cops and against bad people who throw bricks, tire irons and Molotov cocktails at the po-lice.
Where I live, a sheriff’s deputy is recovering in the hospital because he went to serve a warrant on a minor charge and the 18 year old met him at the door and shot the deputy 4 times.
I also liked that line former President Bush got off – something like, “We judge others by their worst moments but judge ourselves by our best intentions” – something like that. Great line.
