New Year’s Eve to be one second longer

We will have a leap second this year.

The Earth’s spin is slowing down and to keep clocks accurate, leap seconds are introduced. At least once every 10 years, scientists add an extra second to Coordinated Universal Time to bridge the gap between earth time and the atomic clock (created in the 1950s). This ensures GPS navigation, computer networks for stock markets and spaceflight all stay on track.

This year, those in charge of the world’s time, Timekeepers at the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), said Dec. 31 will be one second longer. So, Coordinated Universal Time will go to 11:59:60 instead of 11:59:59.
