California Governor Brown signs six gun bills

Posted by | July 1, 2016 19:53 | Filed under: Politics

Five other bills were vetoed.

Brown’s action will require people who own magazines that hold more than 10 rounds to give them up. It extends a 1999 law that made it illegal to buy a high-capacity magazine or to bring one into the state but allowed people who already owned them to keep them.

In an attempt to slow gun users from rapidly reloading, the governor signed a bill outlawing new weapons that have a device known as a bullet button. Gun makers developed bullet buttons to get around California’s assault weapons ban, which prohibited new rifles with magazines that can be detached without the aid of tools. A bullet buttons allows a shooter to quickly dislodge the magazine using the tip of a bullet or other small tool.

People will be allowed to keep weapons they already own with bullet buttons, which are often referred to as “California compliant.”

Brown also endorsed a bill making another attempt to regulate ammunition sales after a law passed in 2009 was struck down by a Fresno County judge who said it was too vague. The new law will require ammunition sellers to be licensed and buyers to undergo background checks. Transactions will be recorded.

He also opted to require a background check before a gun can be loaned to someone who isn’t a family member…

The governor vetoed an effort to expand a six-month-old program that allows courts to temporarily restrict gun ownership rights for people suspected of being dangerous and decided against restricting all firearm purchases to one per month, a limitation that already applies to handguns.

Another bill he vetoed would have asked voters to strengthen penalties for stealing a gun, which voters will already be deciding it through Newsom’s initiative. The ballot measure also will ask voters to require reporting of lost and stolen firearms — an idea Brown rejected Friday and has rejected at least twice before.

too ease to abuse , report it lost or stolen the weapon can disappear

      • whatthe46 July 1st, 2016 at 21:26

but, if the guns are registered and then lost or stolen, why shouldn’t you be required to report it, especially if it will then be used to commit a crime?

The point is moot , just consider the number of gun death with guns owned by ‘responsible gun owners’ eg. the mother shooting her two daughters several days ago

i don’t see what that has to do with being required to report it. i’m missing something. it’s not a t.v. it’s a weapon meant to kill.

report it lost , sell it to a buddy in Texas , the paper trail ends

ok. now, lets say it’s registered, if the buddy in texass (good state to pick by the way) uses the gun to commit murder then the gun will be traced by to its original owner. i see a couple of things happening here, the owner being asked “why didn’t you report it lost or stolen, if that was the case?” the buddy (who probably isn’t suppose to have a gun legally) tells that he got the gun from the idiot buddy, the idiot buddy is now in trouble as well. if they want to take those kinds of chances (the gun owners) then oh well. same as if saying you lost it or it was stolen and you sell it illegally, if its registered and then used in a crime, it will be found out that it was sold and not lost or stolen.

And none of them will make Californians any safer. These new laws are nothing more than infringements on the gun rights of California gun owners.

      Really?

Many of our recent mass-shooters seem to buy their weapons only days or weeks before they go on a rampage, so it might just be a good idea to restrict access to easily-reloadable high-capacity rifles that can be used to shoot more than a hundred people in under two minutes as was the case in Orlando….

And which have no practical use as hunting weapons.

My brother in law posted this on Facebook. This is what the right is afraid of.

I know some of these types as well.
You can’t even have a civil discussion about common sense gun laws.
They’re irrational lunatics who think every kid has the right to own an Uzi.

      • Larry Schmitt July 2nd, 2016 at 08:12

And they don’t seem to understand that most of us have no objections to them using guns for hunting or even personal protection (even though they are more likely to shoot themselves or a loved one than a criminal). It’s a subject I can’t even discuss with him, so I don’t even try. And I don’t comment on things like this that he posts.

So in their fear, the right made it happen.
