Democrats plan ‘day of action’ to keep spotlight on guns

Posted by | June 26, 2016 08:17 | Filed under: Politics

The Democratic sit-in was just the beginning.

In a letter sent to all Democrats on Friday, the organizers behind the sit-in urged their colleagues to “build the momentum” created by the protest, in hopes of forcing the Republicans’ hands by dint of public pressure. “Our sit-in showed that the Republican Leadership can no longer ignore the epidemic of gun violence,” the Democrats wrote. “A movement was born and will only continue to grow.”

The letter was signed by Reps. John Lewis (Ga.), John Larson (Conn.), Katherine Clark (Mass.), David Cicilline (R.I.), Robin Kelly (Ill.) and Mike Thompson (Calif.).

Their suggested day of action: June 29.

Their suggested tactic: almost anything.

“Whether it [is] a press conference, roundtable, or telephone town hall, we encourage you [to] host an event showing that Democrats in Congress will keep up the fight against gun violence,” the lawmakers wrote. “Local partners including survivors, law enforcement and faith leaders can be excellent partners and can help carry our message even further.”

Try crafting the argument along lines republicans can’t answer…
Like, why are we fighting Ocare at $100b a year while gun violence costs $235b a year…aren’t they the party of fiscal responsibilities…???
Why does the party that wraps itself in the constitution refuse to abide by the parts they don’t like…??? Scalia specifically said “… the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: ” He went on to say “… Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.”
We have 3 kinds of laws in this country…Administrative, Legislative, and Constitutional…why won’t the republicans respect Constitutional laws…???

I’m pretty sure we can all agree an AR-15 is a dangerous weapon.

How about reciting that passage on the floor and demanding an answer from the speaker…???

And don’t stop screaming those 3 questions until you get an answer.

damn good questions, mike, but I have failed to read in the 2nd amendment ANY restrictions on a citizen’s personal choice of arms that is specifically not to be infringed upon.

I say Americans get crazier than the gun nuts and their ‘religious’ politicians and uphold our guaranteed constitutional rights!

      GO NUCLEAR !!!

they are infinitely safer than firearms, with NO deaths or injuries by accidental or willful use in the USA.

KEEP AMERICA SAFE FROM GUN NUTS

      GO NUCLEAR !

      the ultimate in personal protection

OK, I’ll agree if you show me the part where it says you can’t yell fire in a movie theater…?? No right is unlimited…

You just defined Constitutional Law … The SCOTUS is the only body that can interpret the Constitution …not congress, not the president, not the AG or any other lawyer or judge…see Marbury v Madison and blame Jefferson if you like.
I quoted DC v Heller and US v Miller (Nat Firearms act of 1934 that outlawed machine guns, grenades, rocket launchers…maybe nukes…??) both precedent setting cases
