Kansas teen fired for asking for pay equal to male friend: 25 cents

Posted by | June 23, 2016 20:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

The 17-year-old Kansas City teen lost her job within an hour.

WDAF-TV reported that Jensen Walcott and her friend, 17-year-old Jake Reed, were hired on the same day at a local Pizza Studio franchise.

When Walcott shared the news with Reed, she said, she learned that he would be paid $8.25 an hour, while she was hired for $8 an hour for the same position even though both had the same amount of experience. She then called Legends and asked to speak to a manager about the discrepancy.

“I was like maybe when I’m on hold right now, she will just offer me 8.25 and everything is gonna be good,” Walcott recalled. “She didn’t do that.”

Instead, she said, the manager fired both her and Reed for discussing their salaries, saying it was a violation of company policy.

She’s from Kansas, so she probably will do as her parents and all for bearers have done and vote for the Grand Old Party. Bloody Kansas, and all that crap.

She’ll be better off at the other job. What misery it would be to work for those bitches.

Equality seems to mean different things to different people , just depends upon which side of the fence you are on

“However, both the National Labor Relations Board and President Barack Obama have ruled that employers are not allowed from preventing those types of conversations between workers.
‘Probably what happened [is], they’re teenagers,’ said a local attorney, David White. ‘They didn’t think they’d complain.'”

From what I heard on the news, she has a lawyer, just for the wrongful termination. Per the labor board, discussing ones salary is not a justifiable reason to terminate a persons employment. Of all the jobs I’ve had thus far in my life, it was never against company policy to discuss ones pay rate. This will be an expensive mistake for that Pizza Studio, especially their reputation.

Good for the young lady for asking questions, and inquiring as to why the pay is different since they both have the same qualifications for the same position. I’m certain this experience was an excellent learning moment for her (and the Pizza Studio too, lol, maybe they replaced the old manager with a new manager who is more “diplomatic”?).
