Homeland security chief: Gun control a matter of national security

Posted by | June 14, 2016 21:00 | Filed under: Politics

Jeh Johnson says gun control is critical to protect us.

“We have to face the fact that meaningful gun control has to be a part of homeland security,” Johnson said in an interview on “CBS This Morning.” “We need to do something to minimize the opportunity for terrorists to get a gun in this country.”

On the issue of people on the no-fly list and various other lists being able to purchase a weapon in the U.S., Johnson said, “I believe that that’s something that has to be addressed.”

The right wingnuts will scream NO NO NO we need more guns

  2. Suzanne McFly June 14th, 2016 at 21:41

How many more mass murders need to be caused before our government realizes they have a effing job to do? 20 babies murdered and nothing, multiple mass murders later and still nothing, people are pissed and I hope in November we can change who owns who.

      >> our government realizes they have a effing job to do? 2

      not the government.

      The Republicans.

We Democrats want gun safety laws. It’s the GOP who are allowing our kids to be slaughtered.

    • EF July 15th, 2016 at 06:49

Nobody owns me, who owns you?

      • Suzanne McFly July 15th, 2016 at 10:38

        Wuuuut?

        • whatthe46 July 15th, 2016 at 11:02

Who? Instead of what at the end of your paragraph? He knew fully well what you meant.

          • Suzanne McFly July 15th, 2016 at 11:10

I just like to speak “stupid” to ignorant people. I am bilingual What, don’t take that away from me lol.

  3. Ron Theison June 14th, 2016 at 22:54

Does the Secretary not realize that 130 people got killed in Paris with fully automatic rifles, a city in a country where such weapons are not legally available to the general public? If gun control is the answer, such a thing could never have happened.

    • Mensa Member June 14th, 2016 at 23:03

      >> If gun control is the answer, such a thing could never have happened.

      Not even remotely true.

Safety laws, including gun safety laws, reduce deaths and injuries. They don’t eliminate them.

      • Ron Theison June 14th, 2016 at 23:48

Gun safety laws and gun control laws are two different things. “Gun safety” is the anti-gunners new words used to replace “gun control” and I for one haven’t been taken in by the new term. Criminals by definition will not obey tomorrows new gun laws any more than they will obey yesterdays. The only thing they do is place another obstacle in front of people who want to exercise one of their cherished constitutional rights.

Where in the Constitution does it say anyone can have an assault rifle?

          • Ron Theison June 15th, 2016 at 09:02

It’s a weapon, an “Arm” – and arms are specifically mentioned in the Federal and many State Constitutions. Quite unlike another right some people claim we have – abortion.

            • Budda June 15th, 2016 at 09:20

So by your logic an “arm” is available to anyone. Tell me, is a howitzer an arm I can own? How about a tank?

              • Ron Theison June 15th, 2016 at 10:12

No. Those are crew served weapons. The recent Heller decision specified that commonly used firearms are legal to own, and AR-15 type rifles are certainly commonly used by the general public.
In one of the first rulings ever on firearms, the Supreme Court ruled that a sawed off shotgun was not constitutionally protected because it was not a weapon used by the military, while the semi-automatic AR-15 type rifle could certainly be considered proper. for military use.
The Supreme Court has ruled – now deal with it.

                • Budda June 15th, 2016 at 10:55

Okay, how about a flame thrower?

AR15’s are not ‘commonly’ used by the public..unless you mean gun nuts in general.

                  • Ron Theison June 15th, 2016 at 12:28

No flame throwers either. No pro gun rights person has ever argued for the right to own those type of weapons, you are trying to set up a straw man argument. As for AR-15 type rifles, millions upon millions have been sold to the general public, so you are wrong – it is a common firearm owned by the gun owning public.

                    • Budda June 15th, 2016 at 14:02

You’re the one with the straw man argument re; “ARM”. You do believe in gun control/regulation, right?

                • OldLefty July 15th, 2016 at 07:34

The colonial Americans were mandated on what weapons to own.
They also had to muster and were VERY well regulated, right down to the drummer.

          • EF July 15th, 2016 at 06:47

Where does it say you can’t?

            • Budda July 15th, 2016 at 07:14

It doesn’t say I can’t own an abomb either…or a tank. Get it now?

              • EF July 15th, 2016 at 09:49

Devices designed by the military, for strictly military purposes. apples and oranges. By that concept the truck in France made a pretty effective military style weapon which allowed one subject to kill 80 people, possibly the worst , single actor mass killing in history. Need to outlaw them too, they aren’t in the constitution. Arms in the historical period relating to the Second Amendment were the arms used in military conflict. They were what the future citizens of this country had, and all they had, to gain their freedom.

                • Budda July 15th, 2016 at 10:32

Oh please . The 2nd was written during the day of shot and powder. Today’s weapons weren’t even dreamed of then . Interpret all you want but don’t forget the word “militia ” and it’s meaning.

      • EF July 15th, 2016 at 06:52

Driving and vehicle safety laws didn’t save 80 people in France.

        • whatthe46 July 15th, 2016 at 10:55

That’s an asinine statement. He used a vehicle specifically designed for the sole purpose of transportation. How he chose to use it under his control was the problem.

A country with open borders… and with a greater and longer history with terrorism.

The DHS Secretary is correct. Gun violence kills 33,000+ and shoots 100,000 in America every year. Costing taxpayers $230 Billion+ in 2010 alone.

Every day, 297 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides & suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention.

Every day, 89 people die from gun violence:
31 are murdered. 55 kill themselves, 2 are killed unintentionally, 1 is killed by police intervention, 1 intent unknown.

Every day, 208 people are shot and survive: 151 shot in an assault, 10 survive a suicide attempt, 45 are shot unintentionally, 2 are shot in a police intervention.

It’s time for Congress to finish the job and expand Brady background checks to stop criminals and other dangerous people from getting guns in America. Learn more and sign the Finish the Job petition. http://www.bradycampaign.org/key-gun-violence-statistics

People die every day from this thing called life. Hospitals kill over 100,000 per year – doesn’t that bother you? Car accidents kill over 45,000 people each year so maybe we should all start walking. And the biggest terminator of human life? That’s right, it’s called abortion, something like 1.2 million per year – now that should raise your eyebrows.

      • Obewon June 15th, 2016 at 09:29

You’re grossly ignorant and offtopic. Especially with regards to 4+ natural blastocyst and fetal miscarriages preceding each live human birth.

        • Ron Theison June 15th, 2016 at 10:48

Roe v Wade is settled law and I accept that, but no one can deny what actually happens during the process.

As for the right to own firearms, during their confirmation hearings, both Supreme Court Justices Sotomayor and Kagan testified that civilian firearms ownership was settled law, but when they had the chance to vote on a gun issue they both voted against gun rights and that was simply wrong.

It looks like they both lied just so they could be confirmed by conservative lawmakers. But why should I be surprised as people in the government who lie to the American people seems to be a pretty common thing these days.

          • Mike June 15th, 2016 at 12:45

Your belief that abortion is murder is no different than Quakers or Pacifists who believe war is no different than murder…

I can certainly respect your beliefs but we are a country of laws written by men … you are free to abide by the law your sky god laid down for you, but it has nothing to do with the rest of us who don’t share your beliefs.

          • OldLefty July 15th, 2016 at 07:35

people in the government who lie to the American people seems to be a pretty common thing these days.
            _____
And most of them are supported by the NRA.

      • fahvel June 15th, 2016 at 12:04

every time you post I realize that there was one abortion too few.

      • Mike June 15th, 2016 at 12:37

Yes, it’s a dangerous world out there like just like you said …what you failed to say is that both industries you listed have gone through pains to lessen the dangers and risks …. hospitals have tens of thousands of safety protocols and procedures in place to abate accidental deaths which has resulted in saving tens of thousands if not millions of lives … car manufacturers have spent billions making their product safer and in the process have reduced the number of fatalities by almost 40% annually…
Your abortion argument is moot since it merely intends to deflect by pitting a legal medical procedure against your belief in a sky god of some sort…

        On the other hand….
The gun industry has spent billions making their product more deadly and lobbying to be able to sell it with little to no restrictions…

        • EF July 15th, 2016 at 06:45

Yet guns still kill less than hospitals and automobiles

      • OldLefty July 15th, 2016 at 07:36

And none of those entities are designed to kill as many people as possible in a short time.

        Abortion?
When is a birth certificate or death certificate issued?

Nothing will happen with this Benghazi/PPH obsessed Congress
