Toobin, Rivera: ‘New York values’ is anti-Semitic trope

Posted by | April 8, 2016 07:43 | Filed under: Politics

When Ted Cruz referred to “New York values” it was seen by many as a knock not just at liberals but also Jews.

On CNN [Thursday night], Jeffrey Toobin told Wolf Blitzer he thinks Cruz’s line will hurt him, calling it a clear “anti-Semitic trope” considering that Cruz specifically said New York is “focused around the money and the media.”

Blitzer pointed out Cruz’s argument about his meaning, but Toobin insisted, “Money and media is Jews. I mean, this is just an old-fashioned anti-Semitic stereotype, derogatory term, and everyone understands that.”

Over on Fox hours later, Geraldo Rivera made the same argument to Bill O’Reilly about the “stinking anti-Semitic implications” of what Cruz was saying.

Everyone knows the Jews control the banks and the media. (snark, in case you can’t tell) Even tRump, in one of his early campaign appearances with some Jewish group, made some crack about their negotiating skills. They were less than pleased with the reference.

No surprise here. Right wingers have a habit of demonstrating that they consider the only “real Americans” to be people who agree with them.

I have lost count of how often I have heard some right wing GOP pol or pundit ranting about Nancy Pelosi and “San Francisco values”

In campaign 2008, candidate Sarah Palin took the stage at a rally in Greensboro, NC where she expressed her thanks at being in a “pro America” town. Cruz’s outburst is just more of the same BS.

Right wingers think they are the only “real Americans”. As a black man in this country, I find this especially significant since we are told that if young black men would just clean up their act, dress appropriately, get a good education, marry the mother of their children, take care of those children, and dedicate themselves to achievement in their chosen profession, racial hatred would be all but extinguished.

Well we have a man like that as a role model who happens to be the President of the United States. I rest my case.

Right wingers will always find an excuse to hate anyone who does not think, act, love, vote, pray or look like them. We are all “real Americans” and anyone who thinks otherwise, is in my opinion, unfit for public office.

Not sure what your point is.
Your role model followed the advice of the right wingers and became president.
Seems to be good advice, right?

As to hate, I see that flowing from both major political parties.
The difference is, when a lefty type does it the media is more willing to give them
a pass, when a righty does it they jump all over them.

Listen to the quotes from Bill Clinton to the BLM group.

The President is accused of lying about his religion, being un American, and according to some, Constitutionally ineligible; in other words, not a “real Ameican” . That was and is my point.

Please clarify where Mr. Clinton said the protesters were no real Americans.

and fyi, I am not sure how often you visit this forum, but personally, any argument that relies on the argument of the mythical liberal media, has zero merit in my opinion.

Anyone who thinks that CNN, NBC etc. are liberal has a few things to learn about the world.

This is liberal media. The above are corporate.

From what I recall, Clinton herself started the whole Birther thing.

          http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2015/09/26/washington-post-confirms-hillary-clinton-started-the-birther-movement/
(Yes, this is a conservative analysis of a different analysis denying the connection.)

And I remember how Bush Jr. was treated, and Clinton, and Reagan. Different types of negative statements, but still negative. John McCain was also labeled as not being a natural born citizen by some. vitriol has sadly been part and parcel of politics since the start. Consider the abiding rumors of Thomas Jefferson fathering children on his slaves.

As to the media being liberal or not, I suppose first we are going to need to define media and also news. There is no doubt that the media, on the whole, can be defined as liberal. From day time shows to the scripted ones, you can find lots of material supporting the current liberal narrative and mocking the conservative one. About the only source I’ve seen of the conservative voice seems to be the over the top religious channels.

And for reference, I’m considered conservative in some area and liberal on others. We can address the issues point by point if you really, really want to and it will help you define it.

For example, I condemn Obama on his lack of serious enforcement on the border. I also happen to condemn Bush Jr. for exactly the same thing. I see the surplus of labor created by the illegal aliens as extremely harmful, especially since it depresses the wages of our, mostly minority, poorer citizens.

The news tends to be a bit more to the center, but the reason why Fox does so well is that it pretty much is the only source of conservative voices, so it thus captures a larger share of the audience, but not necessarily more than the combined liberal sources.

          Bill Clinton reference.

Please note, I believe he’s issued a partial apology for this, so certainly some pressure has been laid upon him, possibly from his wife.

again where in the hell is all this liberal media you are talking about??? really..the only media that can be considered liberal is MSNBC and that’s aprox 3 hours a night..and a couple of hours during the weekend that’s it and there changing that..especially when the media is controlled by conservatives.. your argument don’t hold water…please give me all this evidence that the media is so liberal..cause if it was the REAL problems we have would be out front and center instead of BS we get night after night

I skipped the Breitbart spin and went straight to the copy of Mr. Penn’s memo. I did not see anything about arguing that Mr. Obama’s birth certificate was fraudulent.

As far as Thomas Jefferson and his offspring with one of his slaves. The verdict is in. I presume the Monticello.org site is a sufficiently reliable source.

            https://www.monticello.org/site/plantation-and-slavery/thomas-jefferson-and-sally-hemings-brief-account

Based on documentary, scientific, statistical, and oral history evidence, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (TJF) Research Committee Report on Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings (January 2000) remains the most comprehensive analysis of this historical topic. Ten years later, TJF and most historians believe that, years after his wife’s death, Thomas Jefferson was the father of the six children of Sally Hemings mentioned in Jefferson’s records, including Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings.

But nothing in any of your replies rebuts my original point.

A single campaign manager vetting strategies is a far cry from the base and leadership of an entire political party citing birth certificates in debates about policy.

I would also strongly disagree that there is no doubt that the media can be characterized as liberal. Certainly some daytime hosts are liberal. They are Americans, entitled to an opinion like everyone else. But if we are going to look at programming outside of the broadcast news, when scripted shows have characters who are gay or Muslim being treated equally and fairly, I hardly consider that to be liberal. I consider that to be American. Which was my original point all along.

            • richardstarr April 8th, 2016 at 15:55

You are going to have to define “equal and fair”.
For instance, lets deal with the gay wedding cake thing.

If I was a baker, I’d certainly bake such a thing, but I also respect
the idea of a baker choosing to not create such a thing any more
than I would require an artist to sing a song of praise of the Ku Klux Klan (which if I was a singer, I’d not do.)

Then there is the whole transgender thing and the forced used of pronouns. Caitlyn (formerly Bruce) Jenner is being called “she” despite having all of the original equipment so to speak.
As Bill Mayer quipped, there is something wrong when the “woman” of the year has a dick.

As for Muslims, you need only look at Muslim run countries and see how they treat non-Muslims. To want to stop the United States from going that direction is, in my mind, a good thing. Europe is suffering from its attempts to treat every culture “fairly” which is why now so many of the governments are taking a hard look at what they’ve done, and its not pretty.

This is not to say that all Muslims should be lumped in the same group, but to blindly allow thousands of economic migrants to come here from regions that are known to be anti-American is foolish, especially if for the same cost of providing aid we can help many more of them resettle in existing Muslim countries which at least share the same culture.

It’s cute how you believe that there is a liberal media.

Just wait ’til you learn the truth about the Santa Claus.
