Pope washed refugees’ feet to celebrate Easter

Posted by | March 27, 2016 07:00 | Filed under: Good News Religion

I was going to say I wish more Christians were like this, but how about wishing all people were like this.

Francis celebrated the traditional Easter Week foot-washing ceremony at a refugee shelter in Castelnuovo di Porto, outside Rome, inaugurating the most solemn period of the Catholic Church’s Easter season.

The Holy Thursday rite re-enacts the foot-washing ritual Jesus performed on his apostles before being crucified, and is meant as a gesture of service.

Francis was greeted with a banner reading “Welcome” in a variety of languages as he processed down a makeshift aisle to celebrate the outdoor Mass.

Now,say what you wat about religion, Christianity, etc.
But gettin’ down in there and scrubbing people’s toes?
    Man has got some humility.

I can now say publicly I was raised Catholic and I do not feel ashamed because someone is finally showing the correct versions of the teachings I learned in years of Sunday school.

Seeing this reminds me of Semana Santa in Spain…for me the best festivities are in Sevilla.

      And I learned something.
      Thank you.

Well the hoods are not white so that is a good sign, right?

          I actually was thinking that…

        YQW.
Those are penitentes…different churches have men’s groups (brotherhoods) that do fundraising, charitable works, etc., for their parish….kinda like the KOC.

The first Semana Santa when I saw them, I said to myself, “Oh hell no! Don’t tell me the KKK is here in Spain too!?!”
My neighbor Manolo explained it all to me, he belonged to one of the brotherhoods and they had red capes and hats…each has different colors.

They march in the paseos as part of their pennance and the Good Friday one goes all through the night and town(s)….the town I lived in was small and wasn’t as elaborate as the goings on in Sevilla…still quite moving.

I’ve often told people that they don’t have to be Catholic, or a believer from another denomination or anything at all…there is still something very moving when you see the paseos moving past you…esp. (for me) was the one of Jesus, Pontius Pilot and the Roman soldiers…along w/ La Virgen de Macarena a.k.a., “La Macarena”.

Some folks watching become so emotional that they break out in song, it’s called a saeta, the person sings as long as a minute and up to 5, depending on how they feel about what’s in their heart….very moving as well.
All stops while the person is professing their love/admiration…when they are done everything resumes.
Which is great for the guys bearing the weight of these floats on their shoulders for hours…they do change out at different intervals along the route.

Maybe it’s all the candles or the swaying of the men under these ton plus floats moving down the street…really can’t put a finger on it as it is truly a personal thing….however, it is something you always remember…be you a believer or not.

        Here’s some info for you…
This video is from the town I lived in, Rota…the small church there is San Roque…the float w/Jesus is called, El Nazareno….at the 6.45 mark you’ll see the paseo of the Virgin Mary come out.

And I was in Rota in the 80s…drinking sangria for the USN.

Get out! Me too…except I didn’t do it at the Sangria Shack.

I was an AZ…wanted to be an ABH, so I worked on the line in VP-30…once I figured out how bad it could be in adverse conditions I changed my mind.
Didn’t wanna be on deployment to KeflavĂk de-icing P-3 ‘s.

You probably had some of our A-3’s on the flight deck from the Q.

Ahh, yes! We did the whale dance often.

Not big on any religion, but this ritual is seriously cool…representing what religion should be all about.

When I looked at the draft of 6455 dollars, I have faith that brother of my friend was like really generating cash in his free time with his PC..wty His aunt’s neighbor has done this for only 11 months and by now repaid the loan on their home and bought a new Car.
