Was the release of Americans part of the Iran deal all along?

Max Fisher at Vox poses an interesting theory.

The exact connection between the nuclear deal and this release is not known, and it may not be for years. Had Iran’s hard-liners quietly pledged not to release them until the sanctions lifted, keeping them as bargaining chips against the US they see as innately distrustful? Were Iran’s moderates in on this too? Or rather, perhaps, had they been on the other side of it, cajoling and persuading the hard-liners with whom they’re often at odds to finally let the prisoners free?

Or, in another theory, had the US and Iran negotiated the prisoner-swap all along as a secret component on the nuclear deal? Did Iran insist from the start that the Americans wouldn’t go home until sanctions lifted? Did the US declare that sanctions wouldn’t life until Jason and the others were freed?

The smart money is on a big “yes” – especially given the increasing evidence that there is a whole lot of chaos in the highest echelon of Iranian politics.

I know it’s a long shot, but wouldn’t it be ironic if the nuclear deal led to regime change in Iran? Diplomacy as opposed to carpet bombing or CIA assassinations … who knew?

I would think all of this is very much connected. Two parties who don’t trust one another. A ton of negotiations over a very long time. Yes.

    Diplomacy works…
Bombing is counter productive..(note to GOP)

You could brand that on their foreheads for every time they look in the mirror and they would read it as “bombing works”.

But we can contain them, can’t we? Lets vote on which state to fence off and let the rump lead them there.

Yeah but bombing makes Halliburton Billions.

Hey, remember that time during the Bush administration when America said sorry twice and paid China 34000 dollars to get a P-3 crew back? Remember the right wing outrage?
    Yeah…..neither do I. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/01/15/that-time-u-s-soldiers-were-detained-overseas-by-a-hostile-power-and-america-said-sorry-twice/?tid=sm_fb

Only a right wing wackjob would find fault in getting American prisoners released.

I remember a couple of rwnj’s complaining we didn’t get the hostages released when the Iranian deal was discussed. Now that we did, they will complain we should of gotten the rights to their oil pumps. We will never hear “good job Mr. President.”
