NC Town Rejects Solar Farm As Resident Fears It Would ‘Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun’

And you wonder why Donald Trump has a following.

Bobby Mann said he watched communities dry up when I-95 came along and warned that would happen to Woodland because of the solar farms.

“You’re killing your town,” he said. “All the young people are going to move out.”

He said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland.

Repub Joe Barton said wind is a finite resource. Apparently so is energy from the sun. But “drill, baby, drill.” Really, you can’t fix stupid.

You all have got to follow the link to the source article. This yahoo’s ignorant comments aren’t even the tip of the outright dumb that exists in that little town.

    • ronn214 December 13th, 2015 at 10:31

NO. What you need to do is to find an ALTERNATIVE source like the Roanoke newspaper story and you’ll find they already have three other solar farms around the town and they were more concerned about the aesthetics in the area and the effect it would have on existing plant life as other plants in the area of the other farms are dying. There was a lady concerned about Cancer which wasn’t a bad question. There are thousands of stories about electrical stations causing cancer so it was a legitimate concern. Also, there was no mention how this farm would benefit the towns people. Or maybe it would only benefit the OWNER. The only people benefiting form these solar farms were the owners of the farm and the land owners where the farms were. No mention if the farm would reduce the towns energy costs. This solar farm appears to be only for the benefit of the guy that owned the farm as he would be selling the energy generated on the open market. No reduction in energy prices for the townspeople. There was ONE idiotic moron that made the stupid comment about it “sucking up the Sun’s energy”, he was a Yahoo. Agreed. But that’s not the whole story.

      • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 13th, 2015 at 16:58

I did read the Roanoke newspaper story, that’s what I meant by “link to the source article.” Yes, they claimed plants in the area of the other farms are dying. They also claimed it was because the solar panels somehow affect photosynthesis. Derp. Solar farms are not electrical stations. Derp.

    They’re … so … DUMB!!

    • allison1050 December 13th, 2015 at 06:04

Did you click on the link? It’s an entire town of stoopid tossed with surely must be inbreeding.

      • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 13th, 2015 at 08:20

I especially loved the science teacher and her “You can’t tell me they don’t cause cancer.”

        • allison1050 December 13th, 2015 at 09:01

That’s 1 scary whatever adjective you’d like to use. She probably thinks babies are delivered by the stork.

  14. mohawk16 December 13th, 2015 at 09:25

That awkward moment when you think an article is satirical…only to find out it’s legitimate ?

  15. ronn214 December 13th, 2015 at 09:51

I’m leaning toward this is satire.

  16. ronn214 December 13th, 2015 at 11:00

I read other articles. This story is akin to Right Wing bullshit, except it’s left wing bullshit. ONE SLIVER of truth in a story slanted to reach a certain conclusion. ONE fucking guy made that stupid comment. The townspeople already have 3 other Solar Farms in the town. They had concerns about the aesthetics of the area and the effect it might have on surrounding plant life. There is nothing lower or as dishonest than featuring the most extreme parts of a story as being THE story. The headline here is false and so is the slant of the story. This bullshit story is no better than the shit Drudge or Fox does. We are supposed to be better than that. There was nothing about how the farms would benefit the townspeople. Nothing that it would make their bills lower, (probably wouldn’t) as the owners would be selling energy on the open market. The ASSUMPTION here is these “dumb” people rejected something that would reduce their energy consumption by 20-30-40%, but it didn’t. The farms were for the benefit of the company that OWNED them, not the townspeople. At least the story never discussed how the townspeople would benefit or how they screwed themselves. This is a dishonest story.

  17. ronn214 December 13th, 2015 at 10:19

I guess this site is afraid of being called out for being just like Drudge. They keep DELETING my comments critical and calling out this slanted story. This story is slanted and basically a lie. ONE guy made that idiotic comment. Yet, this story slants it to look like the entire town made the idiotic comment. The town rejected the solar farm mostly for aesthetic reasons. They already have THREE OTHER SOLAR FARMS in the area. But this story implied a bunch of yokels thought the farm would suck up all the sun when it was ONE YOKEL that made that idiotic comment. The story also failed to note that this farm would have been for the sole benefit for THE OWNER, not the town. There was no mention their energy rates would drop 30-40%. (It wouldn’t)

    • arc99 December 13th, 2015 at 10:25

there is nothing slanted about the article.

the headline clearly says RESIDENT in the singular form, indicating one person.

it is also beyond dispute that the council voted in a moratorium on adding any new solar farms.

the headline describes exactly what happened.

      • ronn214 December 13th, 2015 at 10:38

Well if you don’t see the “sleight of hand” used in that headline then you’re just as dishonest as the headline. Headlines are supposed to be a caption of the article that follows. This headline IMPLIES the town rejected the farm because “It would suck up the Sun”, when it was ONE GUY that said that. Why would they put that ONE GUYS comment in the headline coupled with the fact the farm was rejected? It was done for effect. If you read the entire story from an alternative third party and you’ll see the concerns were way beyond what this ONE STUPID GUY SAID! The story is slanted and dishonest.

        • tracey marie December 13th, 2015 at 10:39

“implies” to the weak minded who are easily led.

        • Mike December 13th, 2015 at 10:54

The headline clearly states “…NC Town Rejects Solar Farm…” and “…Resident Fears It Would ‘Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun”

“Resident” would need to be plural and “Fears” would need to be singular to mean what you have implied.
The only thing happening is a bit of linguistic legerdemain on your part, trying to get us to read it the way your dyslexic mind is seeing it…(not trying to be derogatory, dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of)

        • arc99 December 13th, 2015 at 10:58

no one can control what implications you draw from words.

and if you are going to call me “dishonest” because I see that the words in the headline do accurately portray what happened, then I suppose I would prefer to be dishonest than to be someone stupid enough (you for example) to not understand what I read.

you talk sh*t to me, it will be happily returned…

I went to Google Earth to look at Woodland NC. The imagery is mid 2015 vintage so it’s pretty close to a present view. Very rural, nearly all the cleared land you see is under cultivation. The rest is forested. An existing solar farm is outlined in yellow. It’s about 1.5 miles from the center of town, on the other side of a swamp. Existing power line cuts across the view from left to right and the substation mentioned in the article is about a half mile from the center of town. I understand the concern about cancer but that’s related to the high voltage power lines which do not cross the town and obviously have been there for quite a while. I still think the misgivings are unfounded and the science teacher should know better

    • Windsong December 14th, 2015 at 00:41

154 square mile of solar panels could power the entire U.S> MIT
