Alabama Making It Harder For Blacks To Vote
Recent moves in Alabama make it increasingly difficult for black residents to vote.
Click here for reuse options!The first of the moves happened a year ago, when Alabama enacted a law requiring voters to present government-issued identification at the polls. The second happened two weeks ago, when the state shut down dozens of driver’s license-issuing offices, leaving 28 counties with no means of issuing the most common form of ID.
The Republican governor, Robert Bentley, says the office closures are a cost-cutting measure. Opponents say they are an effort toward disenfranchisement that harkens back to Alabama’s painful past. A half-century ago, Bloody Sunday in Selma led to the Voting Rights Act, removing obstacles for black voters.

Though racism is a problem worldwide, there are shallow thinkers out there who only speak of it existing in one region.
How many posts have you seen here about racism in New England?
How about racism on the West Coast or the Rust Belt?
People sometimes fall into a groove without realizing it and soon enough are being as bigoted as the bigots they oppose, the only difference being the target of the bigotry.
Hmm, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but wasn’t Medger Evers from Alabama? Seems to me another civil rights giant was from Alabama, best guesses off the top of my head are James Farmer and Andrew Young, but now I’m thinking Young may have been a Georgian….

The South has already changed a great deal. It was Southerners who led the civil rights movement. Yeah, voter suppression and other issues need to be dealt with, but racism will persist to a far greater degree if we give the rest of the country a pass and pretend racism is only found in the South.

Even if it is a cost cutting measure, and even if ID’s weren’t required to vote, how do you close all but four of the DMV offices. It’s bad enough that it makes it much harder for anyone not living in the four largest cities to get a driver’s license. There are some services that need to be provided, regardless of the cost.

If this is a step back, it’s a step back to the way Democrats used to rule in Alabama. No one’s voting “rights” have been taken away. If I didn’t have an ID that was required to vote and I wanted to vote, I would do whatever and go wherever I had to get one. People need to stop whining and do what they need to do.
