Susan Sarandon worries that Pope Francis will be assassinated in New York because of his progressive views.

“I think they’re going to assassinate him,” she said of the pontiff, who arrives in New York on Thursday. “I think he’s done some major, major cleansing of the whole system.”

The Catholic University alum’s shocking remark about the pontiff isn’t the first time she’s commented on the papacy.

Back in 2011, while being interviewed at the Hamptons International Film Festival, the “Dead Man Walking” Oscar-winner revealed she’d sent Pope St. John Paul II a copy of the book that the film was based on. As for sending one to his successor, Benedict XVI: she said: “Not this Nazi one we have now.” Catholic and Jewish groups criticized the comment.

“I love this Pope,” Sarandon says. “He’s humble . . . he doesn’t live in the palatial whatever. I think he’s a Pope of the people.”

      Better than 50/50 that it would be a ‘traditional’ Catholic that likes things the way there were. Even many of the Bishops and Cardinals are still ‘old school’ and like the pomp and the life style they are used to.

    I truly hope she’s wrong and also hope it doesn’t give some nuts the idea.
    I’m sure it’s always something of concern in everyone’s mind even if she didn’t say it. Unlike the previous Popes, this Pope loves to mingle with the crowd which is really great but very risky. I don’t believe he has the same level of security as POTUS has.
    It will be a great tragedy and loss to humanity if anything terrible happens to him not just in the US but anywhere in the world.

      The FBI stated extra security will be needed due to threats made towards the pope, the right has been in a tizzy because he said “who am I to judge gay”, abortion can be forgiven and climate change is real. Seems this thread is holding the right responsible
