VA Gov Calls For Gun Control

Posted by | August 28, 2015 19:00 | Filed under: Politics

Terry McAuliffe says it’s time to address gun control.

…McAuliffe on Friday vowed to press for gun control reforms following the deaths of two television journalists by a former station employee in an on-air shooting.

The pledge by McAuliffe, a Democrat, came as more details emerged about the Wednesday shooting of the journalists at Roanoke station WDBJ7, including ammunition, letters and clothing found in the gunman’s car.

Speaking after visiting the station’s offices, McAuliffe said he would reintroduce legislation in the state assembly mandating background checks for gun buyers. The Republican-led legislature has rejected his gun control efforts since he took office last year.

“There are too many guns in America, and there is clearly too many guns in the wrong hands. So we’re going to continue to do what we can,” McAuliffe told a news conference.

He said he owned three guns and called background checks “common sense.”

i wouldn’t be surprised if they listen now. damn shame.

  2. Suzanne McFly August 28th, 2015 at 20:24

called background checks “common sense.”…………and that is the reason the right will not support it.

    • maggie August 28th, 2015 at 20:27

      exactly

    • Robert Smithson August 28th, 2015 at 23:11

Memo to Suzanne: Background checks are already required by law.

      • whatthe46 August 28th, 2015 at 23:27

memo to Robert: in some states, there’s no waiting period.

        • Robert Smithson August 29th, 2015 at 08:42

I never said there were no waiting periods in some states, I said that every state has a background check when people buy guns from Federally licensed firearms dealers.

      • Mike August 28th, 2015 at 23:33

38 states have no background check for 2nd hand purchases at gun shows. Estimates have been thrown around so I’ll go with the lowest…350k a year.
        Next question….

        • whatthe46 August 28th, 2015 at 23:39

i hope that shut his ass up. but, we know it won’t.

          • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 00:18

He’ll be back…I can remember when internet trolls were pretty good, these last few are like shooting fish in the frozen food section.

            • whatthe46 August 29th, 2015 at 00:19

i’m cracking up at “like shooting fish in the frozen food section.” that’s hilarious.

            • Robert Smithson August 29th, 2015 at 08:40

You think that only because you are a fellow traveler. Liberalism is a failure, it brings nothing but misery and degredation to the people.

              • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 10:30

It would seem that is a patently false statement on it’s face, since we’re happy and you seem to be the one in pain…

        • Robert Smithson August 29th, 2015 at 08:38

Background checks are required at all gun shows when the seller is a dealer. If I bring a shotgun to sell, none is required and I see nothing wrong with that. And let’s not forget, that some of these proposed new laws would not even allow me to let another person hold or shoot my gun legally if we were at a range. And the idea that I should have to do a background check before selling or transferring a gun to a family member is ludicrous. You liberals only want one new law after another, that picks little by little at ending a a fundamental constitutional right. Safety is not your concern, but complete control over the populace.

          • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 10:46

Nonsense….full of might be’s, maybe’s, and false analogy’s…nobody is talking about a deal between a family member, I specifically said I was talking about 2nd hand deals, plus, you never addressed the fact that 350k guns change hands without a BG check…you lie through omission merely to support a failed narrative….And you don’t disappoint while trying to get us to share the underlying paranoiac mania you seem to suffer from… “.. complete control over the populace.” for real dude…???? as if it were even possible.

Scalia said in Heller ” Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose:” he further allows for “… laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.”

When you can’t get he biggest gun nut on the SCOTUS to agree with you, you might want to reconsider your position.
BTW, don’t give up your day job…your sudden fascination with becoming an internet troll is not going well, in fact, you suck at it.

      • Suzanne McFly August 29th, 2015 at 09:45

And yet 40% are sold without background checks. I see researching is not one of your strengths so I will do you one favor, now do us a favor and read…http://www.factcheck.org/2013/03/guns-acquired-without-background-checks/

  3. maggie August 28th, 2015 at 20:26

FIRE THE GOP, SINK THE NRA, GUN CONTROL IS COMING COMING TO THE USA..(sung to the tune of leonard cohen) GO McAuliffe…..enact more gun control …make your bureaucracies enforce ….and here’s to another term for you! ;) Cheers, Maggie

  4. Red Eye Robot August 28th, 2015 at 21:47

    Yeah, didn’t see that coming

    • bpollen August 29th, 2015 at 03:19

But your comment was completely predictable.

  5. Robert Smithson August 28th, 2015 at 22:17

Just one little problem here with the call for background checks, they are already required by law and the miscreant passed his.

    • Robert Kennedy August 28th, 2015 at 22:32

Yes, because corrupt Republican politicians limited the time for the checks to a feq days instead of the 30-90 days required for a real check.

      • Robert Smithson August 28th, 2015 at 23:10

In this age of computers, the time factor does not matter as everything goes thru the Federal database anyway and our lowlife killer passed his check with flying colors. All we have here is sleazy Democrat politicians using this tragedy to spout off about something that is already required by law, banking that low information people will believe what they say.

        • whatthe46 August 28th, 2015 at 23:28

          you’re the low info idiot.

          • Robert Smithson August 29th, 2015 at 07:19

There are some twenty thousand gun laws are on the books nationwide – you are also one of those low information idiots.

            • Dwendt44 August 29th, 2015 at 12:59

Most of which are unenforceable due to NRA meddling and poor writing by the legislatures.

            • whatthe46 August 29th, 2015 at 13:23

of course there are gun laws on the books. and in most states they suck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_by_state

some states don’t require registration or owner license. *Effective January 1, 2016, individuals with concealed carry licenses will be permitted to carry openly, per House Bill 910 of the 2015 legislative session. Non-residents from states whose permits are recognized by Texas will also be allowed to open carry under the new law.
these are not sensible gun laws by any means.

        • Robert Kennedy August 29th, 2015 at 00:26

Yeah, sure. That’s why the police say they need a far longer time to do a complete check than what they can find on computers in a few days. And it isn’t the Democrats who are sleazy, that would be the ones who agree with you. It’s also the Republicans who rely on low information people. That’s their base.

        • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 01:18

Either you’re lying or you’re just ignorant that the reason given when the waiting period was debated in congress was that it was to be a “cooling off” period…what’s up with that…???

          • Robert Smithson August 29th, 2015 at 07:17

I trust that you would also support a “cooling off” period before every abortion, right?

            • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 10:48

Absolutely….up to 20 weeks is what the SCOTUS allows for. However, you and your ilk keep trying to make it shorter so women have less time to decide…what’s up with that…???
Your trolling is getting worse, not better.

            • Lyndia August 29th, 2015 at 18:32

If a woman wants to get an abortion, that is not your business, what do you have to do with it?

              • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 18:42

Wonder how he’d feel if he had to get a women’s permission for his Viagra prescription…It’s the will of gawd after all that he can’t get it up…

    • Dwendt44 August 29th, 2015 at 00:36

And the ‘gun show’ loop hole is big enough to drive a semi through.
Close that loop hole and the situation will improve some. Tighten it even further by requiring casual sales to be covered, and things get a little better. Closet the swiss cheese holes in gun laws already on the books, created by the NRA stooges, and there is a little more improvement. Restrict military style weapons and limit magazine capacity and things get better. Baby steps. reasonable ones, but needed.

      • maggie August 29th, 2015 at 00:51

        completely agree with your statement.

      • Robert Smithson August 29th, 2015 at 07:15

Of course you deem all your steps “reasonable”, and when those don’t work, will that be the end to your call for more gun control laws?

        • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 18:50

The flawed logical reasoning of a child….
Are you suggesting we suspend or stop enacting laws against murder…??? We have thousands, but the buggers keep killing each other….
Thanks for allowing us to peer into your mind and examine the 2 semi-functioning neurons that enable you to come up with this brilliant and witty repartee…

    • Mike August 29th, 2015 at 01:16

So no problem with the 33 states that don’t require any BG check for 2nd hand deals at gun shows…??? 350k a year is a lot of guns…just sayin.

  6. Tommie August 28th, 2015 at 22:21

Sorry, i believe nothing will change, if a bunch of kids being killed didn’t bring about change then this is about population control and i am sorry for sounding like a conspiracy nut! What else am i to think when money is more important then lives? IMO!

  7. Foundryman August 29th, 2015 at 00:14

Background checks already required only checks for felony convictions. They don’t check if you’re a drunk, if you’re facing a domestic violence charge, if you’re seeing a shrink, if you’re a member of some right wing nazi or anarchist group, (like the nra), they don’t check if anyone living in your home fits any of those. Background checks don’t check to see if you’ve been fired or can’t hold a job, ever filed bankruptcy or had something repoed, it doesn’t check your credit rating to see how responsible you are or if you’re a parent of a delinquent or if your spouse is in prison.

The current background checks are so ridiculously inept that almost anyone can get around it, and of course, the gun lobby and gun nuts know it. When you hear someone say we need some common sense gun laws, a background check that will actually check to see if the person is truly ‘responsible’ is what they are talking about. I hope a strengthened background check procedure with a waiting period until it’s complete is what McAuliffe has in mind.

As a LEGAL GUN OWNER, I am in favor of anything that will stop crazy people from getting a gun. I do not believe, people should have ak-47’s and military type of fire power.
