Walmart To Remove Confederate Flag Merchanise

Posted by | June 22, 2015 20:30 | Filed under: Politics

Walmart has announced it will remove all Confederate flag merchandise from its stores.

The announcement is the latest indication that the flag, a symbol of the slave-holding South, has become toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina. Gov. Nikki Haley announced in a Monday afternoon news conference that she supports removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds.

Walmart.com currently carries the Confederate flag as well as attire featuring the flag’s design, such as T-shirts and belt buckles.

“We never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer. We have taken steps to remove all items promoting the confederate flag from our assortment — whether in our stores or on our web site,” said Walmart spokesman Brian Nick. “We have a process in place to help lead us to the right decisions when it comes to the merchandise we sell. Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly — this is one of those instances.”

Well if all the racist, red neck, hillbillies boycott Wallmart over this, I’d call it a win-win!

    • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 20:44

this is what i said to “anothertoothpick” “boy the rednecks are gonna have a shit fit over that. lol. i don’t think anyone should shop at walmart for quite a while. those gun totin’ fools are gonna go in a blazing.”

      • tiredoftea June 22nd, 2015 at 20:46

I never shop there, and won’t.

        • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:00

i do like looking at the pics of the walmart shoppers on line though. hilarious!

          • tiredoftea June 22nd, 2015 at 21:19

Yeah, when I get a hankering for miracle whip, wonder bread and balogna sandwiches chased down with diet mountain dew, they cure me, every time!

            • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:28

              i just choked. lol.

            • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:30

I’m a liberal but, I gotta admit, I love a collard greens sandwich on white bread with miracle whip and lots of hot sauce.

But, I’ll pass on the Mt. Dew.

              • tiredoftea June 22nd, 2015 at 21:32

With a healthy side of Dorito’s, right?

                • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:38

                  I do like Doritos.

I’m a lefty northerner but I do like Southern “white trash” cooking. I married into Mississippi family and it gave me a taste for it.

Not the store bought stuff — but the cooked food like corn pones, fried chicken, collard greens, red beans and rice, crawdad boils, grits, etc.

                  • tiredoftea June 22nd, 2015 at 21:55

Don’t forget biscuits and gravy, mmmmmm!

                    • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 22:04

                      Oh, yeah. mmmmm.

Cornbread and chili, chicken and dumplings. Jambalaya. Ribs with a side of blackeye peas.

Because of my family, I’ve been forced into mostly vegetarianism but I still like all that redneck food.

But, if I ate it all the time, I’d probably weigh 300 pounds.

                    • tiredoftea June 22nd, 2015 at 22:15

And, your triglycerides would be through the roof.

                      >> And, your triglycerides would be through the roof.

I was a skeptic but I lowered my cholesterol to normal levels through diet.

I took statins for years and my doctor challenged me to give up the usual culprits like bacon, cheese and butter.

It did it for a year and it worked! No more pills.

(I do cheat but only rarely.)

                    • tiredoftea June 22nd, 2015 at 22:57

                      Good on you!

Not cheating when you indulge(treat) yourself. I am a careful eater, once weekly I treat myself to whatever I want…Usually involves steak and carmelized onions

              • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:33

oh my GOD i absolutely HATE collard greens.

                • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:40

Here in Oregon, collard greens are now loved by “foodies”.

                  • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:42

ok. i give. what are “foodies?”

                    • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:48

Oh! I thought “foodies” was an established term.

I guess they are hipsters who take food very seriously. They are the type of people who only accept organic free-range broccoli rabe (or whatever.0

They are annoying but there are enough of them here in Oregon that we get better produce, even in our regular supermarkets.

                    • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:54

but, i bet it’s really expensive.

                    • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 22:10

You are right. We have a fantastic farmers market scene here but it breaks the bank.

But, I gotta say, I am a better cook because of it. One of the “foodie” trends is to eat local and to eat seasonal. You can do that from your regular supermarket.

I especially enjoy doing the “you pick” farms. I imagine most places have those.

                    • rg9rts June 23rd, 2015 at 06:42

Like a rabid vegetarian….I’m a veggie but please not a fanatic..I just watch what I eat….what you consume is your business

                    • Dwendt44 June 23rd, 2015 at 12:00

I watch what I eat too, I don’t want to miss my mouth.

collard greens are the new kale for foodies

        • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:19

i was gonna say. and what’s cafepress? or do i even wanna know?

          • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:55

            Cafepress is actually fine.

They sell t-shirts and water bottles with any slogan you want on them.

            • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:56

              ok

              • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:57

For example, they sell this greeting card.

            • katkelly57 June 22nd, 2015 at 23:31

Including racist ones…stopped shopping w/them a few years ago.
Very inflammatory items there, unless they’ve been discontinued.

          • Hirightnow June 22nd, 2015 at 23:53

            Click “cafepress” in my post.
(Safe enough site; the pj’s are Buddhist or anti-fascist.)

      • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:27

        Yes, I was joking.

It’s telling about conservatism, that you had to wonder if I was serious.

        • whatthe46 June 22nd, 2015 at 21:32

you hit the nail on the head. you’re absolutely right, because you never know with that crowd.

          • rg9rts June 23rd, 2015 at 06:37

It might go well with the sanskrit crowd….

  3. Carla Akins June 22nd, 2015 at 21:13

Why were they selling it to begin with if they find it so offensive?

    • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:28

If talk radio taught us anything — it’s that there is big money in offensiveness.

    • Gordon LP June 22nd, 2015 at 23:05

Bookshops sell books the sellers may find offensive.

  4. StoneyCurtisll June 22nd, 2015 at 21:30

Pretty soon it will only be “gun shows” where nazi paraphernalia and confederate battle flags can be sold and traded….
    Thanks Obama…:)
    (sarcasm)

    • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:34

You can also credit, ironically, Dylann Roof.

      • StoneyCurtisll June 22nd, 2015 at 21:42

        And Jefferson Davis..

        • AAASuperPatriot June 22nd, 2015 at 21:52

Do you spend much time in the South? I used to.

It’s perplexing to me that Southerners can consider themselves patriots while celebrating a traitor like Jefferson Davis.

          • StoneyCurtisll June 22nd, 2015 at 22:52

            Indeed

          • robert June 22nd, 2015 at 22:56

you dont have to travel to the south

they drag that sh*t nationwide and it should all be taken down

I want a gigantic liberal belt buckle.

But what would that even look like?

    • Dwendt44 June 23rd, 2015 at 11:55

Like an American Flag most likely.

  6. allison1050 June 22nd, 2015 at 22:26

  7. robert June 22nd, 2015 at 22:54

from what i read its all confederate merchandise

Lets see if it actually happens ?

  8. madjayhawk June 22nd, 2015 at 23:25

You might be wondering why the media hasn’t asked Hillary about the
Confederate Battle Flag in SC controversy. This is probably just one of the
    reasons.

    • Hirightnow June 23rd, 2015 at 00:06

So, are you blaming the media, or Mrs. Clinton, for a pin manufactured for an election that happened 23 years ago in which she wasn’t a candidate?

(If you don’t have an answer, I’ll just figure stupidity is probably one of the reasons.)

They are their own company, and can do what they want. That said, I find the fact that they sell absolutely any non-free-ranged meat, and I’m sure that there are plenty of people who are offended even by selling animal products at all.

The point is this: If any business says, “We don’t want to sell products that offend anyone,” then they won’t be selling much of anything. Their statement is a bold faced lie.

    • rg9rts June 23rd, 2015 at 06:31

Simple solution…don’t cross their threshold ….I haven’t for 25+ years

      • TuMadre, Ph.D June 23rd, 2015 at 06:40

I completely agree, and follow suit. I was just pointing out the Walmart’s hypocrisy. I’m betting within a year or two, the confederate flag will be quietly reintroduced.

        • rg9rts June 23rd, 2015 at 06:50

  17. Snick1946 June 23rd, 2015 at 10:55

Go to Ebay and search for ‘Confederate’. Hundreds and hundreds of doodads including huge flags being sod with statements like ‘show your pride’. It’s strange- Ebay touts their policy of not selling anything that ‘promotes hate’ but they still allow folks to peddle this stuff.
