McConnell Stymied As Senate Blocks Patriot Act Extension

Posted by | May 23, 2015 08:30 | Filed under: Politics

Rand Paul’s stand against the Patriot Act has been effective so far.

The Senate struggled to prevent an interruption in critical government surveillance programs early Saturday, rejecting both a House-passed bill and a short-term extension of the USA Patriot Act.

The back-to-back votes left lawmakers without a clear fallback, although current law doesn’t expire until midnight May 31.

The White House has pressured the Senate to back the House bill, which would end the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of domestic phone records. Instead, the records would remain with telephone companies subject to a case-by-case review.

The vote was 57-42, short of the 60-vote threshold to move ahead.

That was immediately followed by rejection of a two-month extension to the existing programs. The vote was 45-54, again short of the 60-vote threshold…

The Justice Department has said the NSA would begin winding down its collection of domestic calling records this week if the Senate fails to act because the collection takes time to halt.

Good, it should just die and go away. We need a law that is carefully thought out and discussed, not one that is passed in a hurry after a tragedy. Let’s do it right this time.

Let it die..let it die…let it die…It was a monster that was never tamed, and will never be tamed…the NSA has grown beyond its mandate…Are we a nation of Cowards? always scared of our shadow? or do we face the future with common sense, and good judgements…which means getting the corporations out of our government…

Taking into account all evidence in front of me, I would say we are a nation of cowards who are scared shitless we will be treated the same way we have treated everybody else.

McConnell was so sure that if only he were Senate Majority Leader, he could get everything he wants/ed. He has to be embarrassed by having been rejected two times in two days, back-to-back. He’s finding that being SML isn’t as easy as he thought it would be. He deserves every bit of rejection he’s getting, because, after all, he’s the tool who said his #1 job was “making Barack Obama a one-term president.” McConnell’s accomplishments since 2009 pale in comparison to the president’s, and although he might not want to do it, he must accept that he’s not as effective a politician as the president.
