Capt. Rick Henke and Sgt. William Mudd resigned Thursday, sources confirmed Friday. Also Friday, city spokesman Jeff Small said Court Clerk Mary Ann Twitty was fired Wednesday.

Emails were included in a voluminous report that accused Ferguson of using its police and municipal court as a revenue engine, unfairly tapping the pocketbooks of the poor and blacks.

It was not clear whether the three were alleged to be senders or recipients of offensive emails. They could not be reached for comment.

The sources said Henke was associated with an e-mail from 2008 suggesting that President Barack Obama would not be president for very long because a black man can’t hold a job. They said Mudd was associated with an e-mail from 2011 suggesting that CrimeStoppers paid a black woman who terminated a pregnancy.

The Justice Department report also detailed other emails as well, including one that depicted Obama as a chimpanzee.

I hope this Capt. Rick Henke and Sgt. William Mudd are the first of many to lose their jobs…

For every town like Ferguson that may get cleaned up, there are thousands of more just like it. Very sad.

Still get their benefits I’ll bet. Maybe they can contribute to the fund for the muni judge that owes the US $172,000+ in back taxes

These scums should be jailed not just fired. Whatever punishments they get from this would be nothing compared to the unjust & unlawful punishments they have given their victims

They should have never had the jobs: Screening of police officers are to lax. How about full psychological evaluations and lie detector test and some references as to whether they are bigots, bullies or racist. the whole department needs firing but so does the DA and where is the killer cop Wilson now hauling in money for talks to the KKK and other racist groups and probably writing a book and some sick folks will buy it wow close this department down and make sure they can never be able to put a badge back on

I think too that the screening process should be better. But even more important is to change the culture. I find it unfathomable that colleagues and leadership didn’t know this was going on. Like the Army guy from Australia said:

Our service has been engaged in continuous operations since 1999, and in its longest war ever in Afghanistan. On all operations, female soldiers and officers have proven themselves worthy of the best traditions of the Australian Army. They are vital to us maintaining our capability, now and into the future.

If that does not suit you, then get out. You may find another employer where your attitude and behavior is acceptable, but I doubt it. The same goes for those who think that toughness is built on humiliating others. Every one of us is responsible for the culture and reputation of our Army and the environment in which we work.

If you become aware of any individual degrading another, then show moral courage and take a stand against it. No one has ever explained to me how the exploitation or degradation of others enhances capability or honors the traditions of the Australian Army.

I will be ruthless in ridding the Army of people who cannot live up to its values and I need every one of you to support me in achieving this. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. That goes for all of us, but especially those who by their rank have a leadership role.

Obviously he is talking about sexism in the Australian Army, but it works just as well for racism (and indifference thereof) of US Civilian Peace Officers.

They were allowed to resign?!? That ship should have sailed the day after they learned a federal investigation was being launched. After that, a firing should have been the only possible option.
