They couldn’t figure out where it was.

…the members of the Westboro Baptist Church apparently decided that they wanted picket his funeral. While Nimoy was a more quiet and low-key public figure, the WBC made the announcement that they were planning to make his funeral a spectacle…

The folks at Westboro Baptist Church are known for protesting the funerals of celebrities, fallen soldiers, and other public figures and holding up signs that say, “God Hates Fags” and “Thank God for 9/11.” It’s not entirely clear why the group wanted to protest Nimoy’s funeral in the first place.

    I’m sure it was because he was friends with that well known gay icon, George Takei. Or it could be because they’re a bunch of dicks. And by the way, we need to start referring to this group as Westboro “Baptist Church.” Because there is nothing whatsoever churchy about them.

      Running the risk of sounding sarcastic of which I’m honestly not trying to be, but I don’t follow…

        No, I meant we need to include the quotation marks every time, because that means they’re not actually a church.

      As a nerd who spent a lot of time studying the history of medieval and Renaissance spirituality, I hate to tell you, but the beliefs WBC promotes are quite consistent with traditionalist Calvinist doctrine — even if the group’s explicit articulation of that doctrine has evolved to be seen as, shall we say, impolite. This is also the reason why mainstream Baptist churches were slow to condemn WBC, and only distanced themselves after two things happened: (1) WBC started attacking THEM; and (2) WBC began to seriously tarnish their image. Doctrinally, though? Distressing though this may be, WBC’s theological stance isn’t as fringe as people like to believe.

          I’m not defending WBC OR the Catholic Church — I just take issue with your suggestion that there is some true, “correct” religion out there that’s englightened and progressive; that WBC’s Christianity is “false” Christianity or whatever. WBC’s ideas are abhorrent, but to say they are somehow foreign to Christian thought is a mistake/wishful thinking.

            I’m not saying any religion is correct either, only that these bastards are clearly wrong. At least other “christians” behave like human beings. My point in saying they are not a true church is that they don’t act like what we have come to expect a church to act.

    Their signs say, among other things, “God hates fags.” I’m pretty sure if there is a god, what he hates is people trying to tell other people that they know what god wants or things or hates or loves.

    Wow. It now seems the WBC has proclaimed someone is guilty of being gay “by association”. What’s next? Does someone automatically become an adulterer because they know somebody who is cheating on his/her spouse?
