The debate is driven the by KochWhores…
Even if I agreed with the project, the timing is all wrong. Wouldn’t it be prudent to exploit our enemy’s oil reserves while the price is cheap and save ours (or Canada’s) for when the price gets back up to say $150 a barrel…? Why build a pipeline through our pristine homeland so Canada can sell it on the foreign market…? Don’t tell me about job creation unless you want me to prove you a liar.
This is greed, pure and simple…and proof money can by you a congress if you throw enough of it around…

B…bu…but those 37 jerbs it would create!

      • Larry Schmitt January 27th, 2015 at 14:26

I heard it was at least 50.

        • Dwendt44 January 27th, 2015 at 14:35

UP to 50, and I will bet that not all of them will be American jobs either.

          • Snick1946 February 5th, 2015 at 10:37

You could open a McDonalds in Nebraska and provide that many jobs, The whole ‘jobs’ argument is crap.

        • Anomaly 100 January 27th, 2015 at 18:12

          Wow, now we’re talking!

      • Suzanne McFly January 27th, 2015 at 17:16

Well the spills and clean ups would create hundreds if not thousands of jobs.

        • edmeyer_able January 27th, 2015 at 17:34

Not to mention the number of Health Care Pro. taking care of the increased cancer patients living in the plume around the refineries and drinking water contaminated by benzene.

That’s right Ed, we just got to look for the “bright” spots.

the ultimate irony would be for the jobs to be funded by federal dollars which would almost certainly be the case to clean up a spill affecting multiple states.

it is the same old tired equation we saw with the gulf oil spill.. privatize the profits and nationalize the risk.

          • Suzanne McFly January 27th, 2015 at 19:17

They were trying to get the clean up costs covered by the company who owns the filthy oil but there was disagreement about that with our idiots in office. What effin moron would have a problem with the company cleaning up what they destroyed? I know, the question answers itself.

The land owners have said that if the pipe breaks where it crosses their land they could be held responsible for clean up and damages. Some are being offered 300K and up for crossing rights.

              • Suzanne McFly January 27th, 2015 at 19:30

I seen one guy complaining about how they are taking part of his farm as eminent domain for this. This will be in the court for years no matter what our “elected” officials do.

        • granpa.usthai January 28th, 2015 at 01:03

would also wipe out the ‘breadbasket’ of the USA for the next gazillion years.

    • Spirit of America January 28th, 2015 at 02:30

only 7% can be sold over-seas because it is mixed w/american oil for refining. However, since oil is a fungible, it will affect supply/price overall.

I saw something in my feed yesterday where the R’s were going to change the role on filibusters so the fight is far from over. We just have to hope they wont tempt some ‘blue dogs” w/pork.

    • Dwendt44 January 27th, 2015 at 14:37

No surprise. I notice the hypocrisy considering the way the rabid right ranted and raved when Reid changed the filibuster rules when Democrats were in the majority.

      • edmeyer_able January 27th, 2015 at 15:02

He could have made it tougher on them but didn’t right?

I wonder if the Canadian government knows how much animosity this thing is stirring up down here with a lot of folks. But I doubt making Americans happy is real high on their list- try going there and see how you get treated by their customs people. Worst in the world..

    • tracey marie January 27th, 2015 at 15:46

They know, their own people voted the pipeline down

    • fahvel January 27th, 2015 at 18:52

not even close – you must be a non world traveler.

      • Snick1946 January 28th, 2015 at 11:12

OK maybe not the worst but close. I talk to a lot of people who do travel and also read comments from travelers on websites. Canada Customs has a reputation of being very difficult- especially toward American seniors who they sometimes assume are coming there to mooch off their healthcare system. It happened to us last year, detained for two hours, car searched, questioned over and over before they let us go. NOT the nice friendly neighbor to our north they try to come off as.

        • fahvel January 28th, 2015 at 12:40

bummer, sorry it happened. I am french and a bit older but don’t need canada for health (bragging) but also, I cycle competitively (still) and we cross – as individuals – dozens of frontiers and in my travels, the usa has offered the least pleasant arrivals.

          • Snick1946 February 5th, 2015 at 10:35

Yeah the good ole USA is no walk in the park to get into these days either. We have noticed Canada Customs has become worse the past few years, I think the Harper government is trying to act tough on ‘welfare cheaters’, or something. Based on what we were asked they were NOT concerned about homeland security issues with us, it was all about them thinking we were sneaking in to get prescription drugs or something. I’m sure that goes on but have to wonder if they catch enough individuals doing this to make the effort worthwhile?
