Supreme Court Says It’s Illegal For Arizona To Deny Drivers’ Licenses For The Undocumented

The Supreme Court says Arizona can’t deny drivers’ licenses to undocumented immigrants granted legal status by President Obama in 2012.

The court denied the state’s request to place a hold on a ruling issued by the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which said there was no legal basis for the policy. The state will now have to let roughly 20,000 eligible immigrants apply for driver’s licenses.

With a DL you get to legally drive, buy a car and insurance and contribute to society.

It is a matter of public safety. Once again my state of California shows how it is done. I doubt that these facts will do anything to quell the hysteria over undocumented people voting. But it is way past time to stop worrying about the opinions of people who are allergic to the truth.

Undocumented immigrants will go through the same steps everyone else does to get a license.

They’ll take a written and vision test, if they pass they’ll get their permit then they’ll take a behind-the-wheel test and if they pass that, they will get a license but theirs will look a little bit different than everyone else’s.

On the front, it will say “Federal Limits Apply.” On the back it reads: “This card is not acceptable for official federal purposes” and that it can only be used as a license to drive.

The requirements are: proof of California residency, fingerprints and proper identification.

“Not acceptable for official federal purposes”. Okay, then this is strictly a state issue, so the Federal courts should have no jurisdiction here.

Eligibility for the license is due to federal regulation. Consequently federal courts most certainly do have jursdiction. The provisions of the California law are a clear indicator that the state recognizes that federal law takes priority.

But from a standpoint of pure common sense, you have stated that you are a truck driver. Do you really oppose policy that will make the roads safer, all for the sake of partisan politics?

Cracks me up the way you right wingers wail about the demise of our democratic republic when all that has happened is that a policy you oppose has been implemented, using the very processes and legal system you claim to revere.

Just where does the Federal government get this power? There is no provision in the Federal constitution for state issued drivers, or for them to order the states to do anything regarding this issue. This is a clear cut violation of the 10th Amendment. Driving a vehicle is not a civil right, it is a privilege. Federalism is dead folks, dead!

Really, the constitution only gave horse riding privileges to European settlers I am sure.
