Calorie Counts Coming To Restaurants Near You

The Food and Drug Administration announced a far-reaching regulation that will improve consumer decision-making at restaurants, bars, and movie theaters.

FDA has issued two final rules requiring that calories be listed on certain menus in chain restaurants and other places selling restaurant-type food and on certain vending machines.

“Americans eat and drink about one-third of their calories away from home,” says FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. “These final rules will give consumers more information when they are dining out and help them lead healthier lives.”

The regulations were required by the Affordable Care Act and will hopefully lead to reductions in obesity and improvements in public health.

This is a good thing, studies show if people are aware of the calories and fat they are actually eating they change their eating choices and amounts for the better.

All of the evidence that I have seen in my nutrition classes and other related to health and exercise science conclude that people change for the WORSE, not better when calorie counts are put on food. Do you have a link to these studies?

Maybe they will just go to a restaurant that doesn’t show the calorie amount on the menu and dig in there….no more feeling guilty :-)
