Republican Push Growing For Government Shutdown Over Immigration

Posted by | November 19, 2014 20:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

The Tea Party wing of the Republican Party wants a government shutdown if the president acts alone on immigration.

Seeing no better option to stop Obama, these conservatives, led by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and 59 House Republicans, are pushing for a head-on confrontation that would end in a government shutdown unless he backs down.

“There is a growing momentum to the idea,” Sessions told TPM and one other reporter in the Capitol on Monday. “I think it’s important that Congress use what power it has to resist this presidential overreach.”

One top GOP aide working in support of the Sessions strategy said efforts by some Republicans to pass a long-term government funding bill that doesn’t block Obama’s immigration action was “cratering, fast and furiously.” A senior Democratic aide said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) had been having discussions about a long-term funding bill but recently the Speaker’s office appeared to be backing away…

The Republican base is hungry for confrontation with Obama. A Pew poll released last week found that 66 percent of Republicans want leaders to “stand up” to Obama, “even if less gets done in Washington”; just 32 percent said the party should “work with Obama” even if it disappoints some GOP supporters. The party’s desire for confrontation is slightly higher than it was in 2010.

When over 60% of America stays home and does not vote, this is what you get; a bunch of amoral, lying, hypocritical ideologues who have no agenda other than psychotic hatred of the President of the United States.

Hurting the countries ratings, raising interest rates, hurting people all because they were unable to make the black guy in their WH a one term President.

“66 percent of Republicans want leaders to “stand up” to Obama, “even if less gets done in Washington”… really? … less? … can there actually be ‘less done’ from this Republican House? … aiming for the bottom again… (an easy target!)

Hey it’s Wednesday, let’s do our weekly ACA repeal vote, come on everybody!

    • StoneyCurtisll November 19th, 2014 at 20:45

      Look on the bright side…
44% of republicans still have a smidgen of sanity left in them..:)

This is just the start of two years worth of RightWingMania. A shutdown will piss people off; I say go for it, GOPsters, go for it.

    • tracey marie November 19th, 2014 at 21:53

I say no. The down grading of our ratings and the innocent people who will lose money because they may not work is not worth it.

      • Mary Sandoras November 20th, 2014 at 08:23

Agreed, it affects my husbands job security and I am still pissed at Ted Cruz for the last shutdown. That caused my husband and I to lose bigtime on a potential profitable deal.

These asshats don’t want to govern anyway and they have proven it time and time again. Conservatives only gain power to serve their corporate masters through gerrymandering, voter suppression, fear, and a well organized propaganda network.

    • tracey marie November 19th, 2014 at 21:12

they have been stamping their feet and throwing temper tantrums since 2008, time for real republicans to come out of the closet and shut them down

    • Wayout November 20th, 2014 at 02:44

And the Dems don’t gerrymander? As for propaganda, Comrade Obama is tops with his fear campaign on just about everything, like the stimulus (we can’t wait) and he’s doing the same thing with the illegal immigration question.

Not quite sure how they can justify a shutdown, considering Reagan and Bush both provided an amnesty package for immigrants. Although the spin cycle has begun already stating how this is sooooooooooooo different from what Regan/Bush did.
