Navy Seal Mark Owen: ‘Robert O’Neill Has His Story And I Have Mine’

Posted by | November 15, 2014 10:00 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews Top Stories War & Peace

Mark Owen uses a pseudonym and appears in disguise when he’s on television. He was part of the team that captured killed Osama bin Laden. He wrote a book about it called No Easy day and has now followed up with No Hero.  Owen likes talking about what it means to be a Navy Seal. He says the Osama raid wasn’t even the biggest moment of his career. One thing he doesn’t like talking about is Robert O’Neil.

I find this sudden urge to tell his story very suspicious on several levels. What bothers me the most (as it should for the soldiers ) ** Why didn’t peter doocy ask o’neil ” if UBL was obviously unarmed then why didn’t you take him prisoner ” It has been said we still have POWs in the middle east and our press must have a list that hits the floor with additional questions for UBL. you could say Osama was the most wanted person to be interviewed by this country ? Instead its better to kill UBL then to unlock several mysteries to this war.
I call this mission / interview a failure both on Obama who was online while this mission took place as well as ** the botched interview who blew off the burning question people were screaming at the tv

I’d suggest that the reason Doocy never asked why bin Laden was not taken prisoner is because it was obvious that capture was never really in the cards.

It was simply assumed that bin Laden, with his short AK-47 always within reach, would never go quietly, and let’s don’t even talk about suicide vests and such, so killing him was always the intent. Bombs and drones strikes were discussed but rejected, because of collateral damage and the uncertainty of whether bin Laden had actually been hit. And remember, they weren’t 100% percent sure he was there.

Yes, I know Zero Dark Thirty is only a movie, but the reasoning for sending in a team is nicely capsulized in the CIA analyst’s reply to Navy Seals questioning the judgment:

Maya: [to Navy SEALs] Quite frankly, I didn’t even want to use you guys, with your dip and velcro and all your gear bullshit. I wanted to drop a bomb. But people didn’t believe in this lead enough to drop a bomb. So they’re using you guys as canaries. And, in theory, if bin Laden isn’t there, you can sneak away and no one will be the wiser. But bin Laden is there. And you’re going to kill him for me.

last time I checked our media is to ask questions that the ordinary person was to ask ? you could be suggesting this interview could have been pre rehearsed and based that you mentioned zero dark 30 im more inclined to think it was

        • ChrisVosburg November 15th, 2014 at 15:26

I dunno what else to tell you, but O’Neill said the same thing in 2012 to Esquire magazine, and you may find a more complete answer to your question in that lengthy article and interview.

It also occurs to me that there’s someone else we can ask:

Hey, Alan, how come you didn’t ask Matt Bissonette this question in your interview?

          • fancypants November 15th, 2014 at 21:59

if o’neil had the same (or similar ) interview with esquire mag ? Yea it was pre rehearsed when doocy sat him down :(

            • ChrisVosburg November 15th, 2014 at 23:07

Read the Esquire piece. Get back to me.

              • fancypants November 15th, 2014 at 23:17

no need to ? its not going to answer the ultimate question why UBL couldn’t be cuffed and taken to a waiting chopper

                • ChrisVosburg November 15th, 2014 at 23:23

I can’t make you read it, of course, but it answers the question you are asking.

                  • fancypants November 15th, 2014 at 23:27

it would have been addressed in doocy’s interview unless esquire has exclusive rights to the conversation ? Besides o’neil made it clear no weapons were found and I highly doubt anyone can debunk what was said by o’neil except for president Obama and at this point he isn’t saying anything either way

                    • ChrisVosburg November 15th, 2014 at 23:44

O’Neill never said that “no weapons were found.”

fancypants, do yourself a favor and stop talking.

lol ok I will imagine shots were fired as they ran for the waiting chopper to Afghanistan. Im wondering how none of them were badly injured ?

                    • ChrisVosburg November 16th, 2014 at 00:17

No, it is not the case that shots were fired as they ran for the chopper to Afghanistan. There were three males in the compound, all of which were were armed, and all of which were shot.

fancypants, you ignorant motherfucker, do yourself a favor, and stop talking.

No problem, Carla, and my apologies. I’d merely begun to wonder if fancypants was reading anything I wrote, and lobbed a gratuitous insult as a test. :-)

They managed to take UBLs dead body where it was said to be buried at sea….so they got that going for them Which is nice

No, it is not the case that shots were fired as they ran for the chopper to Afghanistan. There were three males in the compound, all of which were armed and all of which were shot dead. A handful of females and children were not killed and simply left.
