GOP Senate Candidate: Harry Reid’s Senate ‘Like A Plantation’

Posted by | September 9, 2014 19:13 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

Louisiana Republican Senate candidate believes Harry Reid runs the Senate “like a plantation.” I guess that means we have slaves as senators.

The Baton Rouge congressman, challenging Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu this fall, made the comment to the head of the Port of Terrebonne during a tour last week.

Reid, a Nevada Democrat, “runs the Senate like a plantation,” Cassidy told David Rabalais, according to a story posted Tuesday by Energy & Environment Daily about the Pelican State Senate race. “So instead of the world’s greatest deliberative body, it is his personal, sort of, ‘It goes if I say it does, if not it stops.’ Senator Landrieu’s first vote for him to be re-elected means that every other wish for a pro-oil and gas jobs bill is dead. Reid will never allow a pro-oil and gas jobs bill.”

Asked about Cassidy’s comments on Tuesday afternoon, Reid demanded a mea culpa from the the GOP congressman and likened the remarks to Sterling’s racial remarks this summer that led to the owner’s sale of the Los Angeles Clippers.

“With all of the things going on in America today, that’s fairly insensitive. That’s really insensitive. Very insensitive. And if there were ever a statement that deserved an apology, this is it. Big time,” Reid said. “I mean, has he been taking lessons from Donald Sterling? Where’d he get this?”

However, no apology is forthcoming; rather, there’s a doubling down.

“I wish there was as much offense taken by Harry Reid running the Senate dictatorially, not allowing any votes which he does not personally approve of and the result of which he does not endorse,” said Cassidy. “Any other interpretation of my remarks is a false controversy designed to distract attention from policies which are demonstrably crushing jobs and taking our country in the wrong direction.”
