My Interview With The PLO Ambassador To The United States

Posted by | August 8, 2014 10:50 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews Top Stories War & Peace

I spoke with the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Ambassador to the United States, Maen Rashid Ariekat, on Thursday night’s radio show. Here is some of what was said:

COLMES: “Wouldn’t Hamas have to accept Israel, something it’s never done, and take out of its charter it’s desire that Israel not exist?”

ARIKAT: “I think in due time, both Israelis and Hamas must change their positions and accept the fact that the other party has the right to exist, has the right to live in peace and security in their own independent sovereign state. ”…

COLMES: “What about the charges about human shields that is being used by Hamas? That there are weapons in mosques, that the civilian casualties that can’t be avoided because of the way civilians are used?”

ARIKAT: “I totally disagree with Israeli allegations and statements today. Only today, Amnesty International said that there is strong evidence that Israel targeted civilian centers and buildings and population centers deliberately. Even B’Tselem, which is an Israeli human rights organization, also issued a report today saying that there is strong evidence that the Israelis targeted civilian centers. Listen, there has been no proof whatsoever that out of all these mosques that were destroyed, totally or partially, the buildings, the factories, that they found any weapons, inside these buildings. And I am not saying there have not been incidents in which Hamas fighters or Palestinian fighters have fired from populated centers. Gaza is a very densely populated area 1.8 million people in 300 square miles. It’s not unlikely they have fired, but even the laws of war prevent any army from firing back at an area, there is one percent risk that civilians could be killed or wounded in that.”

I did get this nice message on Facebook:

Cant believe you allowed a terrorist to rant on about Israel, without a challenge. No wonder why you are lucky to have a show at anytime of the day let alone prime time

I suppose the American media should present just the Israeli side–which is pretty much what it does, anyway.

The commenter is worried about “terrorists” on Alan’s show but I’ll bet he didn’t mind Mike Vanderboegh’s interview.

Israeli accusations of Palestinians using “children as shields” go back generations. Both the Guardian and Amnesty have been reporting that civilians have NOT been prevented from leaving populated areas where missiles are set up. In fact they DO leave – they run like heck before they get blown up by the most advanced air force in the world! I am sure that missiles ARE set up in populated areas, after all, Israeli embargoes have specifically prevented building supplies from entering, so that no fortifications can be made – so where do they EXPECT them to set up?? I suppose Israeli leaders would prefer their enemy to stand out in the empty desert wearing a yellow jump suit with a blue target printed on it??

Golda Meir famously declared in 1957 that “peace will only come when the Palestinians love their children more than they hate us…”

Maybe so, but I would like to add a caveat: “peace will come when you both love each OTHER’s children, as much as you love your own…”

It’s too bad we have not yet been able to test your theory, about Hamas letting “civilians” leave Gaza itself. As an American, I wish Obama would have responded as quickly to Gaza as he has now in Iraq-Kurdistan, with a US-led evacuation of civilians.
